Description
Alright, what we have up for auction is an incredibly rare 45rpm single from Tony Butala, the only active, founding member of the #1 60's vocal group, The Lettermen.
First thing's first: The condition of both sides is an amazing VG! There's little to no surface noise during the play of either track. I was truly suprised when I put the thing on and it was actually in great listening condition!
I did a lot of research on this single, and came up with a bunch of nothing. However, I'm pretty sure this is Tony's first (and possibly only) single, and I think it was released in 1958, though I'm not 100% sure of the year of it's release, so just to be safe, we'll call it late 50's for sure, as The Lettermen got together in 1960.
Either way, this is quite a rare bird! Released on Topic Records, number on both label sides reads 8001. Then on one label below the 8001 reads TC-101, and on the other side, below the 8001 reads TC-102.
The songs are both Sheb Wooley compositions. The side reading TC-101 (which I'm assuming is side A) is the song Long Black Stockings which is a full out rocker. I mean, it's damn heavy for late 50's! Not what you'd expect the silky voiced Tony of The Lettermen to be doing. For this song alone, this single is awesome!
The side reading TC-102 is a song called Rumors, which is in the vein of The Lettermen's hit "When I Fall In Love"
Orchestra is conducted by Gus Levene.
So again... Tony Butala 45rpm 7" single released on Topic Records, probably in the late 50's. Long Black Stockings b/w Rumors.
A true rarity!
