Rare Complete 1968-1970 Vinyl Set

Very rare to find a complete set of Vol's 1-10. I passed many copies and opted for the best quality vinyl in all cases. Vinyl has been cleaned, Laminate covers cleaned, shined and glued where necessary. Will be packed professionally. All vinyl has been professionally vacuum cleaned removing any dust or dirt and is ready to play.

Record Collector Guide Grading - Vinyl / Sleeve

VOL 1 - NM- / EX-
Vinyl is very shiny, little played a couple of hairline imperfections only. Sleeve spine peeling, name on rear but really shiny front with two small lip creases. All in all a fabulous copy.

VOL 2 - EX / EX-

Vinyl is EX, minor spindle wear and marks. Sleeve is EX- foxing to rear and along front lip, spine intact with very slight laminate raise in several places along front cover spine edge.

VOL 3 - NM- / NM-

Vinyl is very shiny, little played a couple of hairline imperfections only. Sleeve is very well preserved indeed, stunning example.

VOL 4 - EX- / EX+

Vinyl is very shiny, hardly any spindle wear but some surface imperfections although plays excellent. Sleeve spine is excellent, original price sticker still attched, 1 bottom RH small crease on front, rear is hardly marked at all. Excellent example

VOL 5 - VG- / VG+

Vinyl still has a decent sheen, clearly played with some spindle wear and several long line imperfections, overall a very playable copy. Sleeve is EX+ on the front but some browning to rear from dust. Spine intact.

VOL 6 - VG+ / GD

Vinyl is still shiny but clearly played with visible spindle wear and surface imperfections, JOHN written on center label. Sleeve front is shiny with some minor creasing and spine intact but JOHN, who was clearly a child at the time decided to write his name on the rear and attempt a message.

VOL 7 - GD+ / VG+
Vinyl has numerous surface imperfections but playable. Sleeve is NM- on front but rear has a small name

VOL8 - EX- / NM

Vinyl played very few times, a few spindle marks, shiny clean vinyl with 3 one inch surface lines. Sleeve is simply outstanding.

VOL 9 - EX / VG+

Vinyl is EX but with name on inner label. A few marks but very lightweight and surface only. Sleeve is excellent except for name on rear

VOL 10 - EX / EX

Shiny vinyl with very slight groove wear but minimal spindle wear, surface marks only. Sleeve is EX and very clean.

VOL 1
Side 1
  • Young Girl Originally a hit for The Union Gap Featuring Gary Puckett (No. 1)
  • My Name Is Jack Originally a hit for Manfred Mann (No. 8)
  • Can't Take My Eyes Off You Originally a hit for Andy Williams (No. 5)
  • Blue Eyes Originally a hit for Don Partridge (No. 3)
  • Something Here In My Heart Originally a hit for The Paper Dolls (No. 11)
  • Jennifer Eccles Originally a hit for The Hollies (No. 7)

  • Lovin' Things Originally a hit for Marmalade (No. 6)
  • Where Is Tomorrow Originally a hit for Cilla Black (No. 39)
  • La La La Originally a hit for Massiel (No. 35)
  • Boy Originally a hit for Lulu (No. 15)

Comments: Top of the Pops began its account with this mono LP. (The rest of the series would be in stereo.) The cover model has half her cut away, leaving an improbable gap to the left of her neck. (Check the cover of The Best of “69” (!) where you can find her peeking out of the corner but still largely intact.) This cover design was created by Bill Graham, and would become iconic, remaining unchanged throughout Top of the Pops's history and acting as a standard for all the other covers albums to emulate.

In the sleeve notes, the writer has a little dig at the rival series Chartbusters on the Marble Arch label.

  • Help Yourself Originally a hit for Tom Jones (5)
  • I Say A Little Prayer For You Originally a hit for Aretha Franklin (4)

Comments: With the pop charts having been somewhat less than memorable over the summer, The Beatles came to the rescue with the launch of their Apple label in September. As a result, the group's "Hey Jude" appears here, the first ever Apple record, as does its B-side, "Revolution". (Very few B-sides would ever feature in the Top of the Pops series.) And Apple's second single was also a smash hit, Mary Hopkin's "Those Were The Days" topping the UK charts.

  • Build Me Up Buttercup Originally a hit for The Foundations (2)
  • Albatross Originally a hit for Fleetwood Mac (1)
  • Lily The Pink Originally a hit for The Scaffold (1)

Comments: Running into the new year, Paul McCartney and his brother Mike McGear were battling it out for the top spot, with Macca's "Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da" (in the hands of Marmalade) swapping the number 1 position with Mike's group the Scaffold ("Lilly The Pink") over and over. Both are captured here, and bookend the album. Meantime, on Stevie Wonder's "For once In My Life", Top of the Pops had a female vocalist perform the track!

This LP gave rise to a major development in the Top of the Pops story: the recruitment of Bruce Baxter to work on "Something's Happening". His arrangement of the recording served as his audition, and with a decent version pulled off, Baxter was brought into the fold. His presence would loom large over the rest of the series, particularly when he became producer in 1971, taking over from Alan Crawford.

This LP became the first Top of the Pops to feature in the charts - Record Retailer's budget charts, that is - where it peaked at number 7.

  • Behind A Painted Smile Originally a hit for The Isley Brothers (5)
  • Dick-A-Dum-Dum Originally a hit for Des O'Connor (14)
Comments: One of the most celebrated LPs in the series, Volume 5 is famous for the track “Snake In The Grass”, vocalised by a young wannabe singer called Reggie Dwight, who took his standard fee and went on his way. “Snake In The Grass” would be Elton’s only Top of the Pops session in an era when he was making several appearances on budget albums to make ends meet.

Recording engineer Gery Collins remembers the sessions for this LP, and recalls a specific detail on the track, "The Boxer": "I do remember having to replicate the thuddy bang that occurs several times. My tape op thumped a large metal cupboard with a lump of wood & we immersed it in echo. Think on when you hear the track."

We like the way the model on the front has a couple of straws in her pint of lager - transforming it into a refreshingly sophisticated Pimms. (Put your thumb over the straws and you'll see what we mean!)

All grading is very strict, conservative & adheres to 'Record Collector' specifications.
However, I have fine tuned them & they are explained below.
All vinyl is examined closely under a strong light & play tested.

MINT Condition = As good as a copy you would buy from a shop, immaculate!
I will not use this grading unless the item is sealed or under very special circumstances.

NEAR MINT Condition = Very nearly mint just slightly under, maybe a couple of very, very light paper sleeve scuffs that can only be seen under strong light. SOME WOULD CLASS THIS AS MINT. This disc has been played a couple of times at most. Cover is virtually perfect - very minimal wear only.

EX Condition = A clean & tidy copy that shows virtually no defects. Maybe one or two light needle scuffs or light sleeve removal marks that can only be seen under strong light. There will be no scratches. Play will be near perfect with no distortion. Cover will be very nice with maybe very minimal creasing, ring wear or edge wear.

NEAR EX Condition = You can tell this record has been played a few times but it has been well cared for. There will be minor surface marks only; that barely detract from the sound quality. Cover may have slight creasing or ring wear. A very serviceable copy that you will be pleased with.

VG Condition = A well played but serviceable copy. There will be a few marks on the vinyl, but they won't be nasty scratches, just relatively light needle scuffs and sleeve removal marks, they will be noticeable but won't detract from play too much. Cover will show signs of storage/ aging, e.g., creasing, slight folding, spine wear, ring wear or sticker tears. The record will not be trashed!!

WE DON'T SELL VINYL BELOW A "VERY GOOD" GRADE UNLESS PLACED IN LARGE LOTS AND CLEARLY SPECIFIED AS SUCH.

Much of the vinyl that we sell has been cleaned!

Cleaning makes a huge difference to the sound.
We use special machines to suck out and remove all dust and debris from the vinyl so that a clear groove remains for best possible playback.

Larger less valuable vinyl, if specified, will have been cleaned on the VPI 16.5 machine shipped from the USA. On this setup I use an Audio Technica AT 6012X velvet cleaning pad and then vacuum all remaining fluid and debris out.

For valuable 1st pressings or collectable vinyl we clean the vinyl on a state of the art Keith Monks Discovery One as used by the BBC for transcription records. We use our own specially formulated blend of fluid that we mix ourselves and the recipe is recommended by experienced collectors.

WE MIX OUR OWN RECORD CLEANING FLUID
Please find the recipe of our cleaning fluid below

2 liter distilled water
1 litre industrial alcohol (ethanol)
0.5 liter isopropyl alcohol
30 drops of liquid detergent
4 drops of wetting agent
