Some History:

The British tradition of regimental colours dates back to the feudal armies of the Middle Ages when a coat of arms held high amidst the confusion of battle enabled troops to rally to their own leader.  Since this standard represented the center of operations its loss meant disgrace and defeat and much individual bravery has been expended in regaining a captured Colour.  So the tradition arose of each day parading the Colour slowly before the assembled ranks.  As this action is repeated today it carries with it memories of many battles stretching back over the centuries.

To the sound of a brisk march Her Majesty approaches rom the direction of Buckingham Palace and takes up her position in front of the Horse Guards Arch.  Her arrival is greeted by a royal salute and by the playing of the National Anthem.  There follows an inspection as The Queen passes down the ranks of the guardsmen in their bright ceremonial uniforms.

After the inspection the true ceremony of the trooping begins.  In slow time the band marches to a position ten paces from the Colour.  Following a short halt, a quick march is struck up for their return.  The Escort for the Colour approaches to within twenty paces and a salute is made by the Sergeant Major with his sword.  The Colour is then transferred from the Regimental Colour Sergeant into the charge of the Ensign for the Colour.  In slow time it is marched along the line of the Escort of seven men and the command is given “Escort to the Colour, Present arms.”

With the actual trooping over the most majestic part of the parade now takes place, with the Colour still in the charge of the Ensign, the Guards march past in slow and quick time.  For the return to Buckingham Palace Her Majesty takes the place at the head of her own Foot Guards and leads them along the Mall.  At the end she takes a further salute before the Guards march away.
