One of a nice collection of Jazz & Classical rarities we have just had in, a single cherished collection of an audiophile and many unplayed lps.
Two New Unplayed Old Stock 1959 Mingus dates that are both considered as him at the height of his creative powers and with all star bands featuring Booker Ervin & Jimmy Knepper: Ah Um & Mingus Dynasty. Both are gold Demo stamped to the sleeve rears as shown, and came from a source with many unplayed lps to it, and I would have bagged these if they were not in my collection already. These have never seen a turntable, and have rarely been out of the inners, just for me to check when buying and double check when listing.
Perfect for a very high end cartridge, as I shall explain below.
So why these ones with the boring sleeve design, rather than some audiophile reissue?. Most importantly, they are all analogue as they date from 1983, and are from a CBS series that only had tape and lp issues by then - as is clearly stated on the sleeves. At that point the master tapes are 24 years old, fresh as a daisy. By the time of recent reissues, they would have been working with tapes well over 50 years old, and by then we are in to the need for baking, instances of brittleness, stretch, all kinds of issues affect sixth decade tape. So after all the digital repair work is done for a high res file to make a master from, a digital stage or two has been added, even on many post 90s reissues that state "From the Master tapes", because there was no choice, and they are not lying, just that the engineer needed to add the repair/file stage to make it easy to work with. Arthur Salvatore of the High End Audio website states a fondness for Dutch lps of this era, as the vinyl is high quality. This is very obviously virgin vinyl from the look of it.
