What can you say about UFO? With a career spanning 45 years, more than 20 studio albums and double that number of former members, they are without doubt one of the greatest of British rock institutions. I don't know anyone who doesn't at least like some of their work.
This new album A Conspiracy Of Stars, their 22nd studio outing, is the first UFO album to be recorded in their native U.K. for more than 20 years, being produced and mixed by Chris Tsangarides, and is the first to feature current bassist Rob De Luca. It's also the fifth album of the Vinnie Moore era of the band, an era that has produced consistent and strong albums such as The Monkey Puzzle, The Visitor and Seven Deadly, all of which have been fine, but none of which have really equalled the majesty of the true classics such as Obsession, Force It or No Place To Run to name but a few. The same can be said for A Conspiracy Of Stars.
The opening cut "The Killing Kind" proves that UFO today are in perfect working order, displaying all the hallmarks of their classic, and unique, sound. It's got a mighty fine riff and Phil Mogg's voice, although deeper and richer in his more mature years, is still unmistakeable. The slide guitar bluesy rocker "Ballad Of The Left Hand Gun" provides a highlight, as does the totally grooving "Sugar Cane" and the rock solid rocking of "Devils In The Detail" and "The Real Deal." "Run Boy Run" and "Rollin Rollin" show that UFO can still be heavy.
A Conspiracy Of Stars will not disappoint fans who have enjoyed UFO's last few albums, that's for sure. It's another consistent, solid slice of contemporary UFO, and a good album.
