ORIGINAL UK 1972 vinyl pressing in grainy/textured gatefold cover... The first 3 or 4 MAN Lp's are VERY underrated ...great double guitar psychedelic injections within an early Quicksilver Messenger Service vibe mixed with the underground progressive-rock elements of (Lemmings/Yeti era) Amon Duul II
While Pye Records was willing to dip its toe in progressive waters, Liberty/UA had plunged headfirst into very deep prog, signing bands like Hawkwind, Amon Duul II and Can. "Man" entered the early seventies as a dual guitar fronted rock and roll psychedelic/progressive band, highlighted by their willingness to explore more free form territory. Two songs from this album "Romain" and "Daughter of the Fireplace" are intensely edgey kick-ass rockers with Deke Leonard's fiery guitar showcasing furious trade offs with 2nd guitarist Mickey Jones, amid a powerhouse vocal style which would be central to Man's sound. Of the two extended pieces "Would the Christians Wait" is an atmospheric guitar suite, reminescent of "Prelude/The Storm" ...and "Alchemist" is a 20 minute plus jam in the space rock tradition of Amon Duul II. Heavily influenced by their west coast psych peers, the performances have tightened and great experimental ideas were flowing throught this highly underrated and vastly ignored acidrock gem....
