Super rare lp, pressed in the early 70s by tiny private Rambler label in the Frankston area, Mornington Peninsula, Vic.
Under the Effluence was a stage musical that was performed at The Stage, Carlton, in 1972 by a group of drama students from the Melbourne College of Education. The play was a protest/statement about pollution and the environment. The soundtrack was performed by the members of the group at the Rambler studios, to possibly sell at the performance? The entire album sounds like live cuts.....it's pretty rough and raw in places but that only adds to the appeal/novelty in my opinion! Despite this, it's quite listenable with some really good passages of music....the musicians were clearly talented and not backyard hacks. Musically a bit of a mixed bag....but majority of tracks are psych edged rock or folky sounding. Some tracks all performers join in, while others it's a solo performer. Some of the tracks are obviously intended to be humorous....while others are quite serious. As the cover suggests, it's sort of reminiscent of the Hair soundtrack, but without the slick production and with Aussie accents! This would have to be one of the first environmental protest lps recorded in Australia....certainly one the rarest. Rambler were a tiny company.....their records are very hard to find and there was probably only 100 or so copies of each one pressed. The cover has "48" stamped in ink on the back cover....perhaps they were individually numbered and this was the 48th one?
The cover is (VG-). Has notable edge/corner/shelf/ring wear, as well as some spots/stains. Bottom seam is just starting to spilt from opening.
Vinyl is (VG+). Glossy with a few light marks/scuffs. Could do with a clean.
Labels are (VG+). Some spindle marks but otherwise clean.
All in all, a great playing copy of this unusual and very rare lp. A great item for any collector of Oz psych/folk/rock/soundtracks/private labels!
