Description

One of an outstanding collection of Classical rarities we have just had in, all nice clean originals from a retired reviewer.

This may well be the only copy in existence of this major find Stokowski 1959 acetate. Live performances with the announcer still on it, two complete works on a 33rpm mono 12" with typewriter typed labels. Stokowski conducts the LSO in Tchaikovsky: Hamlet - Fantasy overture & Respighi : Symphonic Poem, The Pines of Rome
recorded at Royal Festival Hall, London, 30th June 1959.
The LSO Discography compiled by Philip Stuart and published online this last January makes no mention of the existence of one whole side of this 1959 Acetate, the Respighi Pines of Rome. The other side, the Tchaikovsky: Hamlet - Fantasy overture is the subject of one cd issue on Guild, and is raved about in reviews as being amongst the greatest account ever (my bold):
This latest release in the increasingly important series of Guild CDs devoted to the art of the great conductor Leopold Stokowski combines music by Russian masters of succeeding generations and a unique recording of music by the English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, who was a fellow-pupil of Stokowski at London's Royal College of Music in the 1890s. The three performances are all live recordings, and the Tchaikovsky Overture and Shostakovich Fifth Symphony, both with the London Symphony Orchestra have to be counted amongst the greatest and most impressive performances of these masterpieces ever captured through the medium of recording. "

This is in a strong excellent overall condition. I lowered the weight of my good ortofon stereo cart to just over a gram and it played well in the places I heard it, fully aware of the need to not overplay it.

we send packed in hard card custom made new boxes.
