A crucial underground document of the early '90s, 'Fake Train' was the second album (first to be properly released) by this post-hardcore outfit, whose taut, angular attack has lost none of its impact with the merciless progression of the twenty-four years since. Always an awkward, angst-ridden bunch, they here channeled their anger and alienation into a record that mixes loud-quiet dynamics, mathrock compelxity and Codeine-style misery into a breathlessly affecting feast of gritty intensity. Always unsung yet never to be underestimated, few can still match Unwound for diabolical dynamism and amp-abusing squall alike.
