Let Me Take You Down / Nine To Five
Swingtown #791
Labels and Record are all M- !!!
LET ME TAKE YOU DOWN (no play time listed) has a driving, wild, loud, killer surf/boss guitar garage intro, wailing guitars and a thumping drum... the guitar actually fuzzes out in an awsome way at the breaks!!! Unbelievably muddied vocals throb with the essence of pure psychedelic bliss. This is the grandaddy of grunge garage. Every time the guitar hits that fuzz riff.... you're gonna go wild!!!
NINE TO FIVE 2:30 playtime. Starting off with a PRIMITIVE and frantic guitar that soars above the muddied vocals, this is a driving, powerful garage piece from the summer of '67, with boss guitar work and standard progressions that spell out EARLY GARAGE. It ends in a crystalline fade that sounds as if they (very likely) mixed it themselves.
I was born and raised here in Richmond VA, collected records since about the time this came out, and this is the first copy of this impossibly rare single I've ever had. It was recorded at the Richmond Sound Stages studios, probably the most Lo-Fi primitive recording studio anywhere, creating a cave like ambience that makes both of these cuts truly worthy of being called the ULTIMATE in "Garage". It's truly Alien Psycho Wild Thing music.
The matrix for this is RiTe 1868 SwingTown 20113 (and 20114 on the flip side) The label says "Copyright Aug. MCMXVII D - B & Associates Ltd." Both cuts were written by Roger Stepp. This is a 1967 recording.
The labels are perfect, gorgeous. The center of the label has the much sought after "dip" that frequents a lot of early independantly pressed singles of the 60's. (by this I mean thinner near the spindle hole, thicker at the label print). The record was sleeved when I came across it, buried in a box of otherwise nondescript 60's singles. That is probably the reason this one is in such amazingly INVESTMENT GRADE condition! Other than the two times I've played it, it looks as if it has never been played. So this one easily qualifies as a MINT minus record. The fidelity is nearly perfect, WITHOUT the pops and clicks associated with well worn singles. This IS TRULY the copy you're going to be proud to say you own.
A small press run, and no price guide references make this one a true holy grail. This record NEVER turns up. It's rare. The last copy I heard of being offered for sale was about 4 years ago... and that one was not in very good shape. STILL it brought a hefty three figure price!!!
If anyone reading this can send me instructions on how to insert sound bites in a listing, I'd really appreciate it. I would love to have sample audio in my future listings. I have about 100,000 45's warehoused, and I'm still going through them. I only list what I feel is truly rare or desireable.
