Description
British progressive hard rock legends Uriah Heep released their fourth studio album in 1972, and named it 'Demons and Wizards'. The band formed in 1969, but didn't release their debut album until 1970. (That first one is titled '... Very 'Eavy... Very 'Umble'.) 'Demons and Wizards' put Uriah Heep on the map, and gave the band their first big hit that got played frequently on rock radio: "Easy Livin". (The song "The Wizard" was actually the first single released from this 70s hard rock masterpiece. And they are both fantastic songs!) Uriah Heep is still together as a band, with guitarist and founding member Mick Box as the only original member left.
Today we look back at one of rock's best works of art, going back to nearly FIFTY FIVE years ago! 'Demons and Wizards' first got released as a picture disc LP in 2001, in celebration of the upcoming (at that time) THIRTIETH anniversary. The record label Earmark, a joint venture between Sanctuary (who bought Uriah Heep's back catalog) and Get Back Records released this on a special 180 gram vinyl pic disc. Roger Dean, who's also designed several album covers for Yes, Asia, Budgie, Matthew Sweet, and more, designed this iconic cover. It's the album's artwork on the A side, and a short essay, song titles and credits are on the B side. The vinyl itself looks good, but has a few light scratches on it, mostly on one side. They are hardly noticeable, and only seen in a bright light, and when turned a certain way. But no worries, because I'll add...
TWO CDs of this great classic, remastered AND expanded! That's right, not one, but two! The first remastered edition is from 2004, TWENTY years ago. It adds FIVE extra tracks, four which have never been heard before! (The fifth bonus song is the single edit of "Rainbow Demon".) And this bad boy is STILL SEALED and NEVER OPENED or PLAYED! Brand new and shrink-wrapped, straight from the factory!
Last, we have 'Demons and Wizards', and the 2018 'Art of the Album' series release, in book form! The artwork is "re-imagined" by Roger Dean. Really, he just changed the colors a bit, but nothing too drastic. And it looks awesome! It comes in a book, with several pages of liner notes and essays on the album. Bought used. The disc looks pretty good, but with a few light surface marks on it, (that aren't too bad, and that won't affect play). The book case has some signs of light wear, but again, nothing too bad. And the inner pages of the book are immaculate!
