Uriah Heep : Very 'Eavy...Very 'Umble 1Y1 / 2Y1 1st Press

This first pressing is easily one of the finest I have ever heard, if not the best.  The clarity, depth, power and warmth of the audio is incredible and no word of a lie there is no interference of any kind.  The clarity of sound really is amazing!  A FINAL UPGRADE archive classic for sure.  Even during the quieter moments on the classics 'Come Away Melinda' and the second half of 'Wake Up (Set Your Sights)' there is no background.  The 'heavier' tracks also play with stunning precision and 'Gypsy' is a prime example of that.  This may well be the most 'complete' version of this album that I have listened to and you can tell it has only been very lightly played based on the sonic quality and that there is very little spindle wear.  The vinyl itself is visually stunning also with no marking etc.

The iconic laminated cover is in great condition with only very minimal wear and the original swirl inner is very clean also.

This first pressing has the large Swirl logo and the song writing / publishing credits on the S2 label plus of course the 1Y1/2Y1 matrix.  This particular cover does have 'Walking In Your Shadow' and 'Real Turned On' the right way round on the inside credits but I do not think this is a rarity as I have another one exactly like it!  It was not only the small Swirl logo pressing that had it correct.

Visual description

The vinyl is in lovely condition and still has a very impressive glossy sheen with no marks or scratches.  Under a strong light I can locate a small number of very faint sleeve removal hairlines and there is nothing that stands out.  This is a superb looking vinyl!  There is no groove wear or dulling of the surface and the iconic Vertigo labels are super clean with only very minimal spindle wear.

Play grading

The intro on 'Gypsy' plays with great clarity and power and the depth of the audio is stunning!  Newton's deep bass adds so much to this sound also.  The entire staccato intro from Box is perfect and Byron's opening vocal is just as impressive.  It continues to play with outstanding quality and there is no distortion on the top end.  The mid instrumental lead by Hensley could not play any better and again the audio is so deep and strong and for once the quiet section that follows has no intrusion - it is so quiet!  The remainder impresses on every level also and overall Mint is a fair assessment of this classic track, no need for a minus here.  What a start.

The percussive intro on 'Walking In Your Shadow' is faultless and the opening vocal section is of the same exact standard.  In fact this standard is prevalent throughout - the sonic quality is 'as new' and every vocal and instrumental section plays with sublime clarity and power.  Another Mint track.

'Come Away Melinda' plays beautifully from the very first note.  The quiet intro has not even a solitary dust tick and Byron's opening vocal is equal to that and shows just how wide his range was - he could do 'delicate' as well as hard rock!  It continues to play with STUNNING clarity and warmth and this may well be the most 'complete' version I have ever heard, you can hear each note so clearly - I was noticing things I have never heard before!  As the volume builds into the more powerful vocal section the playback does not falter and Byron voice has an almost operatic 'feel' here.  The sonic quality is incredible and the following quieter section plays perfectly also.  The rest of this classic plays without interference and I have no hesitation in grading this as Mint and you don't find many of them today!

'Lucy's Blues' ends the side with imperious quality from start to finish.  The audio is crystal clear and even as it progresses there is no inner groove distortion.  This bluesy number has no background and Mint is deserved.  A perfect side of music.

The entire intro on 'Dreammare' again shows just how well this vinyl has been cared for and plays to perfection.  From the quiet beginning to the louder passages there is no intrusion and then the opening vocal section is just as strong and powerful.  There is no drop in quality as it progresses and every section is just stunning and that applies to the fade out also.  This is Mint in every way.

'Real Turned On' plays with real power and depth from the get go - oh and the clarity is quite impressive also!  From start to finish this is as good as it gets and Mint is deserved.  It rocks out good and proper!

The long intro on 'I'll Keep On Trying' is 'as new' and Byron's opening vocal is on the same level.  From then on it plays with a clarity and power that cannot be faulted.  I'm trying not be repetitive but it's difficult when every track track is as good as the previous one!  The quieter mid section has no background - the wah-wah solo from Box is stunning and the end vocal / instrumental section have no interference either.  Mint

The first half of 'Wake Up (Set Your Sights)' plays with genuine quality - there is no interference - and the clarity and definition of the audio is flawless.  There is no inner groove distortion either.  The first few seconds of the quieter section play with STUNNING clarity and we all know how rare that is!  I only noticed a couple of barely audible dust ticks and as the rest of the band come back in the audio is breath-taking!  So clean and 'fresh' - perfect clarity - with no ticks, clicks, pops or static.  Byron's next vocal is just as good and right through to the final percussive note there is not so much as a single dust tick.  This is up there with the best I have ever heard, the definitive version you could say.  I don't want to over-sell it but I just write what I hear and the sonic quality here is AMAZING!  A track of two halves and there certainly cannot be many Mint versions of this classic around today.  We have one here!

In summary this first pressing plays to a superb standard with no interference.  Yes it's a hard rock album but of course there are a number of quiet sections and they all play with sublime clarity.  This record has been so well preserved and has preserved its original sonic quality in such an impressive way and it explains why the Vertigo pressings are just so collectable.  In essence this album could not play with any greater precision and I have just noticed I have graded every track as Mint there is not even a single Mint- in there!  That's how strong and clear the audio is and it easily qualifies as a FINAL UPGRADE archive pressing.  The clarity, depth and power of the audio is sensational and together with a superb cover this will grace any collection.

The Gatefold & Vertigo Inner Sleeve

The laminated cover is in superb condition with only minimal shelf wear and there is nothing that stands out.  The edges are supremely clean and the spine is also in great shape with only the usual 'crease' line running down the centre caused by the gatefold being opened.  The corners are very clean with no obvious wear and really it's only the opening edge that has a little wear, the edge on the back cover, and even then it's nothing major.  The front cover is unmarked and has no laminate wear and the back cover has only a minor touch of laminate creasing bottom left and the minor wear next to the edge as stated.  The inside of the gatefold is in lovely condition and has just minimal spotting in the centre.  A fine example overall.

The original poly-lined Vertigo swirl inner (dated 1070) is in great shape with no side splits or tears and only very minimal age related fading around a couple of edges.  Minimal creasing also.

I will only send items items worldwide via tracked shipping.  This provides 'peace of mind' in case of loss or damage.  The shipping costs are shown below and combined shipping is always offered.  Any over-payment will always be refunded.

The Royal Mail only insure up to a value of £250 so if an item sells for more it may be wise to use a courier service (e.g. Parcelforce or DPD).  An extra insurance premium will be required but I will not know the exact amount until the final sale price is known.  Because of this I will sometimes have to estimate the cost and this will be shown in the listing.  Please wait for the invoice before making payment and if you have any questions please feel free to ask.  Many thanks.

All vinyls are packaged in strong over-sized custom made mailers with plenty of extra cardboard protection.  They are placed inside separate poly-lined inners outside the cover so as to avoid seam splits in transit and then placed inside a PVC sleeve to provide even more protection.  I pride myself on my high quality packaging as my feed confirms and if any customer has any specific requirements I am more than happy to help.

The mailers I use cost £1.00 each and I will use anything between 3-5 cardboard stiffeners which cost approx £0.18 each.  There is also the cost of the poly-lined inner and PVC sleeve to consider, it all adds up!  Not forgetting that eBay take 10% of the shipping fee also!!
