The Open Stage Presents "Under The Effluence" A Rock Musical. Original rare Australian LP on the Rambler label in single sleeve. Rambler RR 515.

This is one of the weirdest records I've come across in my 25 years of digging. The blurb on the back states that this was the work of 12 students from the Melbourne College of Education that wrote and performed a musical in 10 weeks- and this is the result. The music sounds a bit under produced- indeed the back blurb even mentions this! - but there are a couple of diamonds in the rough. The closest thing I can liken it to would be the musical hair; although we're way off writing at Galt McDermott's level on this LP! Not to say it's a total write off- some parts manage a respectable dose of psychedelia or rock wah wah flourish on side one- the opener opens with with a brooding groan before building into a rough poppy sounding track with lyrics being shouted such as "cr*p!" "feaces!" "turds!" "Number twos!". Bizarre to say the least. The track "Polluted" takes the form of a roughly tuned Aussie folk singalong with lines such as "I kiss the *rse of Mr Big!" And the closer "we are r**ted!" If there was a better Ozpliotation track than this, save for perhaps TISM, I'm not sure what it would be!

"Effluent Town" sounds like a sparse west coast psych rock track with a sole male lead over a repeating guitar riff.

However, there are some interesting psych/acid/folk tracks- "Neon Gods" is short, but set to a piano with a sole female vocal. "Hear the Echo" that opens side two has a sole female vocal with only one acoustic guitar in a folk/ acid folk accompaniment with a backing choir on the chorus. This is definitely a highlight of the LP! It's quickly followed by "Gods Garden" that has a male lead vocal with only a folk guitar and cymbal flourishes throughout the track. Reminded me a little of the Hush LP by Extradition, although there are vocals throughout this one! "Noah" is a sole male vocal over an acoustic guitar telling the story of Noah and the ark; definitely a folk track that sounds a little like Donovan.

"Blinded" opens on a boogie-woogie Blues structure that sounds not too far away from an Aztecs recording of the time, although the lead guitar badly needs tuning, before it goes into a freak out "I Am Lost". "Creeked" is a rough 12-bar Blues, again, singing about pollution and effluence. "Save The Earth" is a folk singalong with way too in-your-face lyrics about how in 25 years the natural resources on earth will be all used (and now 40 years later, I have to say I can't feel into it to sing along!)

Anyhow, that's what I can tell you after listening to it- I don't recognize any of the artists names on the sleeve and know this must have been VERY limited so get it while you can!

Sleeve is VG+ with only very light wear, only a couple of small spots on the front sleeve where old price stickers were and ringwear.

The LP looks lovely and plays with only light wear throughout, both sides sound solid VG; hardly a mark on the vinyl however it plays with some light crackle. Perhaps after a clean it would be in better shape?

I try to undergrade more than overgrade so bid with confidence!

I grade conservatively to UK Record Collector Standard. PLEASE read and know this standard before bidding as I don't want to have to explain gradings to bidders that are unfamiliar with it.

Postage is at cost. I only send outside Australia by Registered Post as I've had lost parcels too many times. This means around A$32 for an LP, or up to A$25 for a 7" single. Yes, this is expensive but this is what I get charged from the post office. Postage within Australia is A$8.50.

If you have any other concerns or questions PLEASE ASK BEFORE BIDDING! Thanks!
