Real Name: Richard James & Mike Dred Profile: Universal Indicator serves as an acid house outlet for members of the techno-geek-praised label Rephlex. The collective formed as a result of the disappearance of many Chicago house masters once trance and progressive took over as the "it" way to make money from DJing and production. It was also inspired by U.K.-praised producers such as Baby Ford, A Guy Called Gerald, and 808 State. The members of Universal Indicator wanted to focus on making a record that they themselves would buy, rather than just having big names on the record or catchy track titles and design. Though all the contributors to Univeral Indicator aren't exactly known, Richard D James and Mike Dred have leant their skills to productions. James performs under the alias Martin Tressider, and Dred under Kosmik Kommando. Four very limited 12"s were released by Universal Indicator, using the colors red, yellow, blue, and green as album titles, respectively. Dred produced Blue and Yellow, while James went with the albums Red and Green. In 2001, the full-length Dred-mixed CD, Innovation in the Dynamics of Acid, appeared via Rephlex - also in 2001 Universal Indicator 5 - the 5th 12" in the series was released under the name of Kosmik Kommando this time on Beta Bodega Records. This is a superb 3 disc set. The 12" and 7" play at 45rpm but the 10" plays at 33rpm. Most of the tracks are in your face pounders similar to UI Red but personally I think these sound better as there's more going on. Particularly with the relentless percussion. The 12" has one rather uninspiring track that sounds like a dodgy slap bass funk thing, not really in keeping with the rest of the music. The second track on the 7" is beatless and is just soaring synth noise kind of like whale calls.

This set is generally attributed to being Richard D James (Aphex Twin) under the production guise of Tan-09.

The 'We are the music makers' website goes on to suggest that he is responsible for the 12" and 10" but the 7" is Grant Wilson-Claridge (Co-founder of Rephlex records).

The 'All Music Guide' website also states that James produced the 12" and 10" but attributes the 7" to Mike Dred (Kosmic Kommando) who is also rumoured to have produced UI Blue and UI Yellow.

Grading Policy:

MINT - The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

EXCELLENT - The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and / or creasing.

VERY GOOD -  The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

GOOD - The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.

FAIR - The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and / or defaced.

POOR - The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.
