The disc is graded Near Mint and is not warped; there is a mark on Side 1, track 2, and a few light marks on side two. Nevertheless, we believe the disc may be unplayed. • AllMusic Review by William Ruhlmann:
Recorded for Frank Zappa's Straight Records, probably because Zappa and Judy Henske shared a manager in the album's executive producer Herb Cohen, Farewell Aldebaran bears some of the previously heard elements of its principals. Henske, the big-voiced folksinger, gets most of the lead vocals and is identifiable as the woman who sang "High Flying Bird." Jerry Yester, a former member of the Modern Folk Quartet and fresh from a stint with the Lovin' Spoonful (in which he replaced Zal Yanovsky, who co-produces the LP with him and co-writes leadoff track "Snowblind"), displays some of the arranging skills he introduced in his work with the Association. But Farewell Aldebaran is something new for both Henske and Yester, an eclectic pop album made in the spirit of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, mixing folk and rock with country, psychedelia, Renaissance music, and several other styles. Yester orchestrates tracks full of keyboards, strings, and horns, creating attractive art-pop tunes over which he and Henske sing Henske's lyrics, which sound like they were written as poetry, often in an Old English style full of coachmen, horses, angels, eagles, knights, ravens, and stars. ("Aldebaran" is a double star in the Taurus constellation.) One exception is "St. Nicholas Hall," given the style of an old hymn, which is a religious satire. It doesn't sound as though Henske and Yester always had the budget to execute their ambitions fully, and the playing doesn't always live up to the arrangements, but the album remains a delightful exploration of the possibilities of progressive pop in the wake of the Beatles' 1967 breakthrough.

We try to grade the condition of a vinyl record conservatively . Records may be considered flat, or not warped, unless otherwise noted. If one side of a record is in better shape than the other, two grades will appear. Records and covers are graded separately.

  • M = Mint. In all but the rarest cases, still sealed. If we know that an open record has never been played, and the rating otherwise applies, it will be graded mint.
  • NM = Near mint, or unplayed condition. Cover is near perfect, new looking, with no surface or ring wear.
  • EX = Only slight signs of wear; very clean, only light surface marks which do not distract significantly from the sound. Cover has only slight surface wear and is still in nice collectible condition.
  • VG+ = Evidence of play, with moderate surface wear and some minor noise - still plays well. Cover is solid with no breaks but may have minor surface wear or some ring wear.
  • VG = Overall wear, but no skips or serious defects. May be somewhat noisy during quiet passages. Cover is worn, with considerable ring wear, and may have partially broken edges.
  • VG- = Playable, but both the record and cover are well worn.
  • G or G+ = Poor or Rough condition. Holefiller only!
