• You are bidding on one UNUSED copy of the Various Artist 3 vinyl LP Boxed Set "Voices Of The Civil Rights Movement: Black American Freedom Songs 1960-1966," released in 1980. This appears to be an original release, not a reissue. Production coordination - Bill Bennett. Transfers And Master Tape Preparation - Jack Towers. Booklet by Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon.   "Voices Of The Civil Rights Movement: Black American Freedom Songs 1960-1966 documents a central aspect of the cultural environment of the Civil Rights Movement. It is a series of musical images, seen both distantly and at close range, of a people in conversation about their determination to be free."

• The LPs and box jacket is USED but in excellent condition. (See grading legend below). All three discs are graded NM and are not warped; we believe they are unplayed. There are a few superficial marks but no scratches on any of the six sides. The jacket is graded Very Good (VG); there is considerable wear on the outside of the box on all surfaces. However, the box itself is in solid condition; there are no breaks and the hinge is complete. The booklet is in excellent condition - no damage except for a 1 inch circular stain on the lower right front cover, both sides. The inner sleeves are vinyl lined and in great condition. The actual item is pictured below.

• AllMusic Review by Richie Unterberger:
  The civil rights movement used freedom songs to spread their message, adapting folk and pop tunes with contemporary topical lyrics, or writing new songs addressing social injustice in general, and injustice for African-Americans in particular. This is a two-CD, 43-song compilation of such songs, recorded live in mass meetings in churches between 1960 and 1966. The SNCC Freedom Singers, including in their ranks future Sweet Honey in the Rock mainstay Bernice Johnson Reagon (who wrote the liner notes), contribute quite a few tracks, but the majority are by less professional soloists and choirs. Historically speaking, this is a valuable document of a movement whose importance cannot be underestimated; if nothing else, it's interesting to see how folk and pop songs (including such unlikely candidates as Ray Charles' "Hit the Road Jack") were changed to reflect struggle for equality. Musically speaking, it's not that captivating; the fidelity is sometimes rough, and the performances interesting purely from an archival standpoint. This isn't meant to diminish in any way the significance of these songs, just to say that they were effective mostly as organizing tools, not as pure musical statements. Listeners will need to have a strong interest in the historical context of these recordings to justify their purchase, because as music it can make for a dry experience. Some of the SNCC performances, however, do stand up on their own as fine folk/gospel, especially "In the Mississippi River," "Governor Wallace," and "Oginga Odinga," imaginative compositions that are movingly sung.

The record will be shipped in the original paper inner sleeves. The jacket will NOT be shipped in a plastic sleeve because none are available in that size.

• EX = Only slight signs of wear; very clean, only light surface marks which do not distract significantly from the sound. Cover has only slight surface wear and is still in nice collectible condition.
  
• VG+ = Evidence of play, with moderate surface wear and some minor noise - still plays well. Cover is solid with no breaks but may have minor surface wear or some ring wear.
  
• VG = Overall wear, but no skips or serious defects. May be somewhat noisy during quiet passages. Cover is worn, with considerable ring wear, and may have partially broken edges.
  
• VG- = Playable, but both the record and cover are well worn.
  
• G or G+ = Poor or Rough condition. Holefiller only!
