HERBIE HANCOCK Empyrean Isles. Used LP (RE/DMM) pressed in France, in Near Mint/Near Mint condition. Classic Blue Note! Catalog # BST 84175; 1964, reissued 1985
Condition: The record and jacket could pass for just having had the shrinkwrap removed in 1985. Played all of twice by me, the original owner. I have remarked in some of my other listings that Direct Metal Mastering (DMM) for a reissue doesn’t make much sense if a batch of vinyl is of shoddy quality. Happy to say that Blue Note got it right with this one. Includes paper inner sleeve promoting the label, with soft poly interior. Only minor flaw is my handwritten note on inner sleeve to self for future reference about applying noise reduction equipment to reduce master tape hiss. I was just a bit fanatical about such things in my youth!
Behind the Music: Blue Note Records, founded 1939, really hit its stride in the late 1950s, thru the ’60s and on into the decade after that. This album is but one of many masterpieces the label cranked out, swiping two members from the Miles Davis classic quintet and adding Mr. Hubbard into the blend. PERSONNEL: Hancock—piano and composer; Freddie Hubbard—cornet; Ron Carter—bass; Anthony (Tony) Williams—drums. No need to hype that lineup. The selections: One Finger Snap; Oliloqui Valley; title tune; The Egg. That’s right, only four cuts, leaving room for the guys to stretch out. Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder.
