BILL WITHERS: Live at Carnegie Hall. Used vintage gatefold double-LP (cut-out) in Very Good+/Very Good condition. Sussex Recs. LP Catalog # SXBS 7025-2; 1973

Condition: Vinyl for LP One has some typical visual flaws, which don’t affect sound. LP Two is essentially Near Mint. Album played twice in its lifetime. Jacket shows some wear, partial ring impression on front. Cut-out notch at lower left as seen from front hardly visible, as it intersects the record label logo. Top and bottom corners of jacket as seen from front slightly bent. Notch penetrates to original paper inner sleeves, which are included. They have some large wrinkles but are totally intact (no seam splits).

Behind the Music: Raise your hand if you’ll want to scream next time you hear “Lean on Me” played on the radio. Okay, did you get that out of your system? You should not let such a feeling deny you the pleasure of enjoying this excellent live performance from 1973. Mr. Withers, subject of the recent documentary film Still Bill, has the audience in the palm of his hand from the outset. I confess I was not familiar with the band backing Bill, but they work excellently together. Upon revisiting this album, I was surprised that I’d forgotten about the tune that opens Side 3. “I Can’t Write Left Handed” is about a young man recently home from the Viet Nam War. An intimate emotional portrait.

PLEASE NOTE: I will not sell anything for less than $9.99, as it’s not worth packaging the item up and taking it to the Post Office. Sure, you can buy an LP for 50 cents or less at a yard sale, but will it have been cared for like mine? Not likely.
