PHAROAH SANDERS: Heart is a Melody. Used vintage LP in Near Mint/Very Good+ condition. Theresa Recs. LP Catalog # TR 118; 1983

Condition: Record played only twice. Vinyl has a few minor scratches, scuffs. Purple labels perfect. The jacket has areas of discoloration at lower right of front, lower left of back. These could actually be printing errors, as they very nearly match the blue color of the clothing Mr. Sanders is seen wearing in front of jacket pic. There is a wrinkle at lower left corner of jacket as seen from front.

Behind the Music: After recording for ABC Impulse! Records, sometimes in company of John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders recorded several albums for Theresa Records, an indie operation based in El Cerrito, California. This is probably my favorite from that run of albums, largely because of the beautiful title tune (full title: “Heart is a Melody of Time (Hiroko’s Song)”). William E. Henderson is allowed to blossom with his keyboard work, which I believe includes a synthesizer for imitating human voices. There are also live human voices in the mix for the title tune, a studio recording. The quartet is completed by John Heard on acoustic bass and Idris Muhammad on drums. The other selections were recorded live at Todd Barkan’s Keystone Corner nightclub in S.F. Side A of the album is a 21-minute rendition of Coltrane’s “Ole.” Completing the roster of tunes is “On a Misty Night” (Tadd Dameron) and “Goin’ to Africa (Highlife).” Sanders had become fond of this rousing form of musical celebration popular in Nigeria. I believe my asking price is reasonable because in late December 2025 there are only 9 copies of this LP being offered on Discogs, with a median price sold of $78.50!! My price takes into account the minor cosmetic issues with the jacket.

[NOTE: I clean all LPs with the Record Doctor device, but you will likely find my items rather dusty when they arrive. I have a lot of static electricity in my house, and dust always instantly returns to record surfaces after cleaning! Sorry about that!]

PLEASE NOTE: I will not sell anything for less than $9.99, as it’s not worth packaging the item up and taking it to the Post Office. Sure, you can buy an LP for 50 cents or less at a yard sale, but will it have been cared for like mine? Not likely.
