SWEENEY TODD Original Broadway Cast Recording. Used vintage LP X 2 (gatefold) in Near Mint/Very Good+ condition. RCA Red Seal Recs. LP Catalog # CBL2-3379; 1979
Condition: Vinyl essentially Mint in appearance, played all of once. However, I cannot in good conscience fail to mention that the pressing is pretty noisy, a disappointing job by RCA’s Classical division. Packaging—I kept the shrinkwrap on this gatefold album until just the other day, but this did not prevent a bit of mild discoloration on front of jacket. There is a crunch at upper left corner as seen from front. This must have existed the day I bought this at retail, as I never played these records until recently (September 2025). [I was privileged to see the show live on Broadway in 1979 or 1980, so didn’t feel an urgency to listen to the cast recording.] Original inner sleeves with soft poly lining included. The Libretto is absolutely pristine, never having been thumbed thru.
Behind the Music: What an amazing achievement by the late Stephen Sondheim is “Sweeney Todd,” aptly subtitled “The Demon Barber of Fleet Street”!! A tale of bloody (to say the least!) revenge, chills and thrills. Not lacking in humor, though. I think by the time I got to see the show on stage George Hearn had already replaced Len Cariou, who is in the title role on this recording. But the delightful Angela Lansbury was still there, as Mrs. Lovett, baker of delightful meat pies!! I was disappointed by Tim Burton’s movie version of the tale. What you will hear here is the real deal! My asking price reflects the generally very good physical condition of the components, and reflects a discount for the less than fabulous pressing.

[NOTE: I clean all LPs with the Record Doctor device, but you will likely find my items rather dusty when they arrive. I have a lot of static electricity in my house, and dust always instantly returns to record surfaces after cleaning! Sorry about that!]
PLEASE NOTE: I will not sell anything for less than $9.99, as it’s not worth packaging the item up and taking it to the Post Office. Sure, you can buy an LP for 50 cents or less at a yard sale, but will it have been cared for like mine? Not likely.
