Ok so I've got some rare Private Press LPs on Auction this week..
V RARE UK PRIVATE PRESS FOLK LP A JUG OF PUNCH John Dave & Eric JOHN HASSELL1967
Up for Auction is this mega rare folk LP pressed on John Hassell Recordings. Release dated 1967. I think this may be the first time this has come up for sale on eBay, not sure. This comes with just a plain cover. The record is credited as "John Dave & Eric sing", and this is how it appears on the only documentation of this release on a website dedicated to private/custom pressings. Interestingly though, the handwritten note on the cover states Hartley Group, which I think relates to Hartley Victoria College in Manchester.
Musically this LP sounds like your typical mid 60s folk club offering - the recording is basic which adds to the appeal in my opinion. Unfortunately there is no tracklisting anywhere on the labels or sleeve. Ther are 16 tracks in total. I have listened to the whole LP and some of the songs I recognise are:
Lonesome Traveller - All My Trials - Wild Rover - Blowing Down That Old Dusty Road - Jug Of Punch - The Last Thing On My Mind
Musically there are (male) harmony vocals and a sparse backing featuring at harmonica, guitar and banjo.
Sound quality wise as I've said the recording is fairly primitive so expect some mild hiss in places. On "All My Trials" there are some good harmonies which distort in places presumably due to recording levels. I like this sort of thing though.
Condition: Following on from above, expect some enevitable noise due to nature of recording. But on the whole it is very listenable. The record looks a decent VG+ with only mild scuffing but a closer look reveals a scratch on Side 2 which is just about feelable with fingertip. This causes cyclical ticking through the end of one track and most of the next one. So a fairer grading would be VG. Labels are nice and bright and free from writting or tears.
Finally, it could be some time before this ever surfaces again so now is your chance if private press folk LPs are your thing.
