(2-LP set) Mississippi Records is proud to present a reproduction of the Anthology Of American Folk Music as it originally was released in 1952. Each volume is a double LP, housed in a cloth bound super thick cardboard gatefold sleeve with a tip on print on the front. In the gatefold there is a pouch with a reproduction of the original liner notes. The vinyl is 200 Gram. We have gone to great lengths to reproduce the LPs just as they originally were designed by Harry Smith. All the materials and mastering are as top notch as possible. The first volume of the Anthology focuses on ballads. Great murder ballads, lonesome love songs and songs of tragedy. The American experience writ large and poetically.

Album Notes
Originally released in 1952 as a quasi-legal set of three double-LPs and reissued several times since (with varying cover art), The Anthology of American Folk Music could well be the most influential document of the '50s folk revival. Many of the recordings which appeared on it had languished in obscurity for 20 years, and it proved a revelation to a new group of folkies -- from Pete Seeger to John Fahey to Bob Dylan -- who covered the songs, tracked down the artists, and made new field recordings to document other strands of folk music. The man that made the Anthology possible was editor and compiler Harry Smith, a man born in Washington but a drifter much of his life, as well as a painter, filmmaker and anthropologist. From his collection of thousands of old 78-rpm records, Smith compiled 84 of his favorite hillbilly, gospel, blues and Cajun performances from the late '20s and early '30s (all originally issued by labels such as Columbia and Victor), and divided each into one of three categories: Ballads, Social Music and Songs. Smith sequenced the three volumes with a great deal of care, placing songs on the Ballads volume in historical order (not to be confused with chronological order) so as to create an LP which traces the folk tradition, beginning with some of the earliest Childe ballads of the British Isles and ending with several story-songs of the early 20th century, which document happenings of special interest to contemporary listeners, like the sinking of the Titanic or the boll-weevil plague. [After being out of print for years, The Anthology of American Folk Music, Vol. 1 was reissued as part of a six-disc box set, containing all three volumes of the Anthology, by Smithsonian-Folkways as a six-disc box set in 1998.] ~ John Bush

At City Hall Records we understand that you want your LPs to arrive in the same condition they're described.  So, we pack them carefully in a cardboard mailer, insulated with thick cardboard pads on each side, and with reinforcement on the corners. We want to be sure you get your LPs in the same condition in which they leave our warehouse.

Sealed LP Inspection Service

Since all of our items are factory sealed we cannot be fully responsible for the condition of the invisible part, unless (you ask us to) inspect it.  Even though incorrect, defective or damaged product is very rare, we highly recommend that you allow us to inspect your item before we ship it out.  Just let us know by writing INSPECT in the note to seller box when paying via PayPal.

If there is something wrong with your record that could only have been seen by such inspection, and you did not request it, we will not be responsible for the cost of shipping the faulty product back here, or for the shipping of a replacement item to you. We will replace the faulty item, however, as long as you pay for these freight costs.

Also, many LP buyers prefer to have the disc shipped outside the jacket to minimize damage to the jacket.  If you have requested that we inspect the disc, then we'll pack it outside the jacket.

If you're in a country other than U.S. or Canada, please note you'll get the best per-unit price and fastest delivery on your LP shipments by ordering at least 4 discs at a time.

We enclose an actual invoice with your shipment and do not falsify customs valuations.

If you are at an address where there are customs duties, and you have ordered an amount that puts you just over the limit for avoidance of such duties, we're willing to do you the service of discounting the merchandise a little upon request, if you'll allow us to make up for it with an equivalent increase in shipping and handling fees. We'd want your agreement to give us good rankings for fair shipping/handling fees in such instances.
