Dig The Fuzz Rds, 1996. One of the best volumes in this fantastic UK psych series, on the unfortunatly now dead and buried Dig The Fuzz label.. Great great track listing, and marvelous packaging...

"Dig the Fuzz is a fairly new label. I haven't been able to track down a lot of their releases but they sure know how to get my attention - and I'm not talking about the bright orange gatefold housing this LP! These guys've got taste, not to mention the connections needed to deliver the goods. Somehow they strike me as having a "young" approach as well (maybe it's all the typos!). Anyway, outside of the "fruity" title we've got a very fine record here, serving up as it does a mix of beat, mod (to me, mod = [R&B x feedback] + drugs) and psychedelic winners with only one real (make that real LONG) dud.

John's Children, one of my personal favorites (public opinion be screwed) amaze here, in part by ending all three of their songs (from the BBC) with nearly identical drum-pounding rave ups - cheeky! Mal & the Primitives cram "Every Minute Of Every Day" so chock full of frantic guitar, thudding bass and soulish backups that it nearly topples, but they manage to hold it together in ace fashion. The Downliners Sect's straightforward-psych 1968 recordings reflect Keith Grant's growing interest in the mystical worlds of JRR Tolkien and entomology.

There's a couple of repeats from an old Circus Days comps, but both songs, particularly the inventive "Eiderdown Clown," deserve repeat exposure. From the earnest blueswailing of the Hipster Image and (yet another) "unknown acetate" to the cool pop of Elli and St. David's Road, there's a whole lot on offer here.

Finally, I have to make note of "Boring Song" by Charge. I'm not sure when it's from, but it's one of the few songs I can think of that can only be compared to Madcap Laughs-era Syd Barrett - perhaps without the genius quotient, but at least in mood/feel. Stay tuned - future goodies are on the way - if I can only find the damn things.
