Description
HERE is a fine first vinyl pressing of The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other by Van Der Graaf Generator on original UK Charisma pink scroll from 1970, complete with the rarely seen double-sided poster. Only early issues of this album came with the poster, yet it has come to represent an essential accompaniment to the record in that it features not only the complex lyrics but also Peter Hammill's guidance as to how you should approach the music: "Don't listen when you are hustling", he instructs, "because it won't get in your head. Don't listen when you're angry because you'll smash something ... etc". In his illuminating sleevenotes ("written off the top of my head"), Hammill also highlights the history and "hassles" of his band. This genuine original poster has never been displayed so there's no pinholes, tape, adhesive residue and no corner chunks missing, as is sometimes the case, though there is some evidence of light wear/creasing and additional creasing to the original factory folds. Whilst not perfect it is nevertheless a very presentable example indeed, either for display purposes or to add informative enjoyment to your listening. The heavy slab of original vinyl with A+G/B+G matrices is in EX- condition with only the very lightest surface/scuff marks to note when examined under harsh halogen lighting. Both textured pink scroll Charisma labels are fine, with no writing or sticker tears, and little sign of wear. The unlaminated gatefold sleeve is VG- with some age-related wear including light creasing and foxing, rear ringwear, edgewear, plentiful spinewear and a small area of minor sticker wear on the top right of the front panel. In Galactic Ramble, writer Aaron Milenski considers this to be the band's "most consistently good record, without a complete dud among its six lengthy songs", though he adds: "Take that statement in context - as usual, there are some duff moments mixed into otherwise good songs".
