Description
This is one of the all-time rarest Bakersfield country LPs ever... the wonderful Vancie Flowers' Birds and Bees album on Pampa P-110. Features several of her classic songs, such as I'm So Lonely and Wet Back (not a derogatory song!). But they are different versions from the singles. She made a handful of singles in the late 50s and 60s and at some point this record was issued, but it is unclear when. The label is a local Bakersfield label and it doesn't seem to have been made in great quantities. These never turn up. If I were to venture a guess as to when this album was made I would say maybe around 1969 or so. She is playing an earlier guitar in the photo, but it could be an older picture of her than the record is. Anyhow this sounds almost like a live recording, not in front of an audience, but clearly not a carefully miked and mixed recording... her sound is more like a Tammy Wynette style than the usual guitar-driven Bakersfield sound, but she supposedly used several well-known Bakersfield players and was quite well-loved in that city, though never reached a wider audience.
Anyhow this copy is very nice indeed. The disc does have a few light scuffs but it plays near flawlessly and just beautifully. The cover is also nearly pristine with just a touch of edgewear at the bottom and at the lower right corner. A beautiful copy of an impossibly rare album.
