Two-Piers' fresh new variety LP, Soul Psychedelique: The Sounds Of Psychedelic Soul & Funk 1967-2024, spans, as the title so transparently suggests, nearly six decades, tracking the evolution of soul into psychic territory, and pairing vintage 60s and 70s grooves with contemporary reinterpretations up to 2024. These span from Curtis Mayfield's '(Don't Worry) If There Is a Hell Below, We're All Going to Go', The Temptations' 'Psychedelic Shack', The Chambers Brothers' 'Time Has Come Today' - with modern exponents like Khruangbin, Gabriels and Michael Kiwanuka on refresher duties. Covers and reinterpretations, including The Five Stairsteps' 'Dear Prudence' and Bobby Womack's 'California Dreamin', sit astride deeper shades from Isaac Hayes, Terry Callier and Rodriguez, and there's where things grow much trippier.
