· PLEASE NOTE: DESPITE NUMEROUS APOCRYPHAL STORIES ALLEGING THE EXISTENCE OF THE U.S. STOCK MONO COPY OF THIS ALBUM (SEEMINGLY MORE COMMON THAN STORIES OF LOCH NESS MONSTER’S ADVENTURES), I YET HAVE TO SEE OR FIND A SINGLE ONE. I CAN HONESTLY SAY THAT I HAVE NOT SEEN A SINGLE STOCK MONO COPY OF THIS ALBUM IN FOUR DECADES AND I DO NOT EXPECT TO EVER SEE ONE (EXCEPT, PERHAPS, AS A BOOTLEG). PLEASE PARDON MY SKEPTICISM, BUT I HONESTLY DO NOT BELIEVE THAT U.S. STOCK MONO COPIES EXIST; IF, IN FACT, THEY DO, I CAN ONLY ASSUME THEY ARE STEREO PRESSINGS WITH MISPRINTED MONO LABELS AFFIXED AND INADVERTENTLY PACKAGED IN MONO COVERS. UNLESS YOU ARE WILLING TO TRAVEL TO JACKSON HEIGHTS, NY AND LOAN ME A COPY OF THE ALBUM YOU FEEL IS THE ORIGINAL MONO STOCK PRESSING SO THAT I CAN VERIFY YOUR CLAIM IN PERSON, PLEASE REFRAIN FROM TRYING TO PERSUADE ME OTHERWISE: I WILL NOT BUDGE.
· ORIGINAL VERVE LABEL WITH A LARGE T-SHAPED LOGO, YELLOW PROMO VERSION
· ORIGINAL, CUSTOM MONO COVER WITH MONO CATALOG NUMBER ON THE COVER AND THE SPINE (PAPER SLICK PUSHED HAS BEEN UPWARD TO COVER THE STEREO CATALOG NUMBER AND REVEAL MONO NUMBER ON THE BOTTOM).
· *** Original "skull and bones" cover which appears only on first versions of this album and was deleted on all subsequent pressings ***
· NOTE: some controversy endures whether the original, first pressings of this album did or did not have the Andy Warhol artwork credit on the back cover. One of the world’s best and most reputable Velvet Underground web sites claims that it DID NOT and that it was added later (►click here for more details), although we have grave misgivings about the accuracy of this information.THIS PROMOTIONAL-ONLY MONO COPY DOES HAVE ANDY WARHOL CREDIT ON THE BACK COVER
· ORIGINAL U.S. PRESSING
· THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, AUTHENTIC, FIRST U.S. PRESSING; THIS IS NOT A REISSUE, AN IMPORT, OR A COUNTERFEIT PRESSING.
· THICK CARDBOARD COVER, AMERICAN STYLE.
· COVER IS STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL SHRINK (CELLOPHANE) WRAP
· “BREATHE” (AIR) HOLES NOTED ON THE SHRINK WRAP (ONE ON EACH SIDE)
· NOTE: MONO PRESSINGS OF THIS ALBUM HAVE A DISTINCT, RECOGNIZABLE COVERS WHICH CANNOT BE MATCHED WITH STOCK (STEREO) RECORDS. YOU MUST HAVE A “PROPER” MONO COVER WHICH GOES WITH A PROMO MONO RECORD IN ORDER TO HAVE A COMPLETE, MATCHING, HISTORICALLY ACCURATE SET. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MONO AND STEREO COVERS IS AS FOLLOWS: (A) ON MONO COVERS, THE ALBUM TITLE IS PUSHED UPWARD (B) ON MONO COVERS, THE “SKULL AND BONES” DETAIL IS ALSO PUSHED UPWARD AND IS THEREFORE LARGER (BY ABOUT 20%) AND MORE PROMINENT THAN ON THE STEREO COVERS (C) MONO CATALOG NUMBER APPEARS ON THE BOTTOM OF THE FRONT PANEL; STEREO COVERS HAVE NUMBER ON TOP, AND (D) ON MONO COVERS, THE CATALOG NUMBER ON THE SPINE APPEARS ON THE BOTTOM OF THE SPINE; THE CATALOG NUMBER ON THE STEREO COVER APPEARS ON TOP OF THE SPINE.

This is the very first pressing of one of the most aggressive, radical and ambitious avant-garde albums ever recorded in the history of Rock. The creative tension between Lou Reed and John Cale is tangible and thick as mud. Truly one-of-a-kind Rock album. Song listing: White light / White heat - The Gift - Lady Godiva's Operation - Here she comes now - I heard her calling my name - Sister Ray. The bidders should note that this album contains “dedicated” mono mixes which are considerably different: much more raw and "punchy" than the common, commercially available stereo mixes. The difference is most obvious on two tracks: The Gift (where John Cale’s gimmick stereo separation is conspicuously missing) and Here She Comes Now (listed as “There she comes now” on the cover) which has a totally different intro and may actually be a completely different TAKE of the song altogether.
For its extraordinary contribution to the modern music, superb production, craftsmanship, fine musicianship, revolutionary significance and influence it exerted on numerous generations of musicians, writers and general public, or for some other innate quality, this album was voted one of top-200 albums of all time in one of the largest poll of critics, music reviewers, professionals and producers ever organized: the poll, which was conducted by Paul Gambaccini, legendary BBC Radio A&R man, surveyed more than 50 top music professionals (including Roy Carr, Jonathan Cott, Robert Christgau, Cameron Crowe, Chet Flippo, Ben Fong-Torres, Charlie Gillett, Greil Marcus, Murray the K., Lenny Kaye, Bruce Morrow (a/k/a "Cousin Brucie"), Tim Rice (of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Evita" fame), Lisa Robinson, Robert Shelton (who wrote liner notes for Bob Dylan's first album), Ed Ward, Joel Whitburn, Pete Wingfield, etc.). For more details, see: "Critics Choice: Top-200 albums" compiled by Paul Gambaccini, Omnibus Press, Library of Congress Catalog No.7855565 (or ► click here for the complete album listing)
VERVE’S YELLOW LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record. (This being a rather moot point in this particular case, since this rare promo-only MONO version of the album was never commercially released to begin with).

· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.
(c) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(d) Yellow Label Promo-only mono version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 100:1. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version.
