Jacket / Sleeve: STRONG NEAR MINT - OUTER GATEFOLD
A fully high gloss white gatefold jacket with no loss of sheen, no signs of age or yellowing. There are no scuffs, tears, writing or ring wear . A few scattered minor marks.

Front cover has a FULLY UNPEELED BANANA STICKER - w/ a small, less than one inch taped repair - the sole item of note.  (see photo #14 and photos #1, 2, 3 & 4)
 
A fully mint rear sleeve has an unpeeled rare black Verve sticker covering the naked
torso of Eric Emerson during his threat of litigation. These were copies put in circulation
after the recall but prior to the air brushed editions. There is no documentation as to how
many of these "second state" interim copies were issued. This was obviously a legal
move on the part of the label - no image, no liability. This kept the record on the market. These copies were all original gatefolds with stickers to cover the offending and potentially litigious image of Mr. Emerson, a bit player in Andy Warhols' movie CHELSEA GIRLS, who took offense at his naked image being screened in a light show in back of the Velvets in performance, turning up on the back cover of their first album without his permission. The copyright laws are cited - the image is banished and numerous collectible editions are established - This being the finest one we have ever seen. A commercial mono release - the ideal way to have this record , in ideal condition , as mixed by the band themselves.

NEAR MINT- INNER GATEFOLD - All seams firm and intact. no tears, writing, rub marks of any kind. Various scattered paper age spots, which can happen to certain paper stock - (see photos 12, 13)  this is the only flaw on the inside of this jacket that prevents it from having the identical grading as the outer jacket.

HISTORICAL NOTES:
It is not an unjustified statement to say that the first Velvet Underground LP was the most ground breaking revolutionary album in Rock and Roll history. It was as if Chuck Berry had never been born: released in March of 1967, now forty years later its influence continues to be felt . The release of this album was a watershed moment in sixties music, art and culture - no other record of its day had this impact.   -  Still being felt in the rhythms and chords of the young bands on the scene today.                                                                                             

The first Velvets album was recorded in three studios in 1966 - SCEPTER and MAYFAIR STUDIOS in New York City and TGG in HOLLYWOOD, CA. The MONO MIXES were done by the band themselves and show them at their finest - louder bass, thicker guitar mixes, fuller vocals - in effect a self produced album. The Stereo version was a remix done by Tom Wilson.The East Coast pressing is also much more sought after (which this is)   -
