🎷 Historical Context

McKinney’s Cotton Pickers were one of the most important jazz dance bands of the late 1920s and early 1930s.

  • Founded by drummer William McKinney, the group rose to prominence after Don Redman (arranger for Fletcher Henderson’s orchestra) became their musical director in 1927.

  • They were among the first African American jazz orchestras to achieve national popularity through Victor recordings.

  • Redman’s arrangements were sophisticated, bridging early jazz and swing, influencing big band orchestras like those of Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman.

The Victor “VE” (Victor Electric) mark indicates it was recorded using Victor’s advanced electrical recording system, introduced in 1925, which offered much better sound quality than earlier acoustic recordings.
