VINYL LP PSYCHEDELIC PSOUL/THE FREAK SCENE EXCELLENT GRADING 1967 STEREO. Columbia CS 9456. Psychedelic Psoul by The Freak Scene was mostly the creation of writer/singer/guitarist Rusty Evans (born Maurice Uzilevsky) along with studio musicians. The previous year, 1966, the same musicians performed with Rusty as The Deep, releasing the lp Psychedelic Moods, notable for being the first use of the term "psychedelic" on vinyl. Both releases didn't reach much of their targeted stoner audience. Being a studio group, they didn't tour so that didn't help sell records. And the anti-war liner notes would be controversial today, let alone 55 years ago.
That being said, in later years Psychedelic Psoul has garnered some critical acclaim. The song "Rose Of Smiling Faces" (nice play on words), with its spoken word accompanied by raja guitar and bass, brings to mind a more reserved Jim Morrison, whose group The Doors released there debut two months prior. Almost all the song titles scream psychedelia - "Behind The Mind", "The Subway Ride Through Inner Space", and "Mind Bender" to name a few. I also couldn't help comparing the short songs, sparse yet inventive production, and eclectic instrumentation to a zonked out 1967 version of The Residents!
All in all, this record should be in one's collection because it's one of a kind.
Vinyl Grading: Excellent on side one, with a couple of very light scratches that show up under strong light towards the last three songs. They do not affect play. Excellent on side two, with a couple of very small light scratches that show up under strong light on the second song. They do not affect play. Both sides are free of any other scuffs, scratches or defects of any kind. No spindle wear, no label wear. The cover is NM-, with no wear of any kind except for small slight small corner wear on the bottom left, and the upper and bottom right.
Record comes with original plastic inner sleeve for the vinyl and a protective outer plastic sleeve for the cover.
