Description
Big bandleader Kay Kyser was very popular in the late 30s through the late 40s, having gotten into the big band business through his UNC college chum, bandleader Hal Kemp. Kyser's band made 7 successful feature films (and appeared in 2 more), blending comedy w/ great swing and novelty songs, in addition to having 11 #1 records and 35 top 10s.
This 78 rpm record was privately recorded in 1939 at RKO studios during Kyser's first comedy/musical THAT'S RIGHT, YOU'RE WRONG, directed by David Butler (Shirley Temple films, Hope-Crosby Road pictures). The record was done as an affectionate gag gift to Butler, who grew very close w/ Kyser's band and directed the first 3 Kyser films. The record's titled BUTLER'S LAST STAND, filled with 'in-jokes' and done like a very long poem, voiced mostly by Kyser himself, Ish Kabibble (band comic and trumpetist) w/ the choruses sung by Harry Babbitt, long time Kyser vocalist. The flip side continues the 'joke' poem. Since it was privately recorded, it was not distributed publicly, and copies went only to Kyser bandmembers, Butler, and the RKO crew who worked on the film. Listening condition is excellent, no skips or audible scratches. Very RARE, thus the high opening bid. Sleeve looks to be original in near mint condition, and the label reads only 'BUTLER'S LAST STAND, with 'Kay Kyser' written below in ink, but it's not an autograph.
The band made a similar record after their second film (YOU'LL FIND OUT w/ Karloff, Lugosi and Lorre)called BUTLER DOES IT AGAIN. I have that one too, but it's not for sale. I found this one recently on ebay, but the seller didn't know what he had. I already have a copy given to me by a KK bandmember, so this one's for sale.
