Cliburn was exhausted, they say.  Two days prior, he had just finished his highly acclaimed tour of the Soviet Union, where music lovers had marveled at his virtuosity.

But there, mics set-up and waiting, Carnegie Hall sat, every Rca executive in attendance wanting a glimpse of what they had heard from abroad.  There, too, was Russian conductor Kondrashin, with the Symphony of the Air.  The conductor had insisted he helm the orchestra for the event, this day, May 19, 1958.

And Cliburn played, oh yes…as David Sarnoff (Rca CEO) later said upon hearing this: "If one seeks an explanation for Van Cliburn's magnetism, I would simply say it is musical control coupled with spontaneous beauty."

This offering is of the Pfeiffer produced half-speed version of this classic, pressed on heavy vinyl as an audiophile edition, factory sealed.  (Note a cover notch.)
