 Very, Very light hairline scuffing and light spindle marks

Overall, this is a really, really nice record. And, most importantly, it has the “First Press Sound”

Jacket Condition: Gatefold: VG++

The jacket is a gatefold and in terrific shape with minimal ring wear on the front and back. The corners are all nice with just the slightest amount of shelf wear, which can be seen in the photo. The inside also has a small amount of scuffing. There is a ½” long seam split along the spine at the very top. The jacket has the words ”Sleeve printed and made by the E. J. Day Group, London and Bedford”.

Inner Sleeve Condition: VG++

This is the original die cut inner sleeve. It is Excellent condition for it’s’ age with

NO seam splits. As you can see in the picture, it has the words “MADE IN ENGLAND” in the lower right corner.

OK, so how does one get “Master Tape” sound from USED vinyl?

I am a music collector just like you. I enjoy listening to my records! I only consider listings with detailed grading information when

looking for a recording to add to my collection, and expect that you do the same. The sonics of a vinyl recording are what I am

ultimately interested in. I feel that the visual appearance of the vinyl is the first factor when considering the potential sound quality of an

lp, but it is only one factor in the quest for optimum fidelity from vinyl recordings. If you are purchasing records it is because you get the

fact that analog has THE POTENTIAL of providing more detail than digital. You have also discovered that the visual appearance of a

record, even if it appears to be mint, doesn’t guarantee that it will have better than digital sound. Pressings from Mercury Living Presence,

Sheffield Labs, MFSL, UHQR, or are Direct to Disc usually don’t disappoint. These are just a few of the labels that are known to have

exceptional dynamics. I have been collecting and listening to records for years, often acquiring multiple copies of the same LP. What I have

found is that certain pressings have the potential of “Master Tape” sound. There has been a great deal written, by others more knowledgeable

than myself, as to why this occurs and which copies to look for. I will assume that you know this as well, and if the recording I have listed is

of this caliber, you will then understand the reason for the associated price.

What you can expect to receive from the records offered for your consideration!

Important information about my grading philosophy

While the vinyl grading process is an un-exact science, I do my best to accurately grade using the Goldmine Grading Standard. I inspect

items under a strong light for the purpose of visual grading. If I visually detect a potential issue with the vinyl, it will be “spot checked”

for evaluation, then clearly  mentioned in the listing. I have found that, on occasion, a record may look better visually than it’s actual

play grade condition. On the other hand, I have been surprised by records that look really bad and yet have the “Master Tape SOUND”

(a particular Bud Powell Blue Note “Microgroove” pressing comes to mind). If you are the type of collector  that won’t accept sleeve marks

(which can occur during the manufacturing process)  then it would be appreciated if you look elsewhere! Personally, I would prefer an

honestly, and accurately, graded open copy of a record that has exceptional dynamics over a sealed copy that is without provenance. 

With this in mind, please understand that I always attempt to grade a record conservatively. My theory is that one persons NM is another’s VG+,

and visa versa. In practice I give the lowest grading possible taking into account the VISUAL CONDITION of the record and jacket. I wish I had

the time to play grade every track of every lp. That being said, please remember that unless mentioned, I probably haven’t grooved the entire recording.  

GOLDMINE GRADING

SEALED: Never opened...never played.  Still in original shrink.

MINT : It should appear to be perfect. No scuffs or scratches, blotches or stains, labels or writing, tears or splits. Mint means perfect.

NM : Otherwise mint but has one or two tiny inconsequential flaws that do not affect play. Covers should be close to perfect with minor signs of wear or age just becoming evident: slight ring-wear, minor denting to a corner, or writing on the cover should all be noted properly.

VG+ : The record has been handled and played infrequently or very carefully. Not too far from perfect. On a disc, there may be light paper scuffs from sliding in and out of a sleeve or the vinyl or some of the original luster may be lost. A slight scratch that did not affect play (skip) would be acceptably VG+ for most collectors.

VG : Record displays visible signs of handling and playing, such as loss of vinyl luster, light surface scratches, groove wear and spindle trails. Some audible surface noise, but should not overwhelm the musical experience. Usually a cover is VG when one or two of these problems are evident: ring wear, seam splits, bent corners, loss of gloss, stains, etc.
