Various Artists - Genesis Volume 2 Memphis To Chicago - Extremely Rare
I'm not sure how much introduction is necessary for the following vintage vinyl box set, but for blues record collectors, the 'Genesis' sets definitely represent an incredible period. The late Mike Leadbitter compiled this four LP set and penned the liner notes. Leadbitter's name should need little introduction based on his incredible writing during his life; he kick-started Blues Unlimited magazine with Simon Napier in the 1960s and later wrote the seminal 'Chicago Breakdown' (now published as 'Chicago Blues'). His respect was, and still is, literally worldwide. This volume, the second in the series, features some of the South and Chicago's heaviest hitters from the late 1940s into the '50s; Sonny Boy Williamson, Elmore James, Robert Nighthawk, Howlin' Wolf, Willie Nix, Joe Hill Louis and others. Considering its age (1973) it's in very good shape. The box corners are all tight and there are no splits or any signs of separation. There's shelf wear along the bottom and at the corners where the black overlay paper has worn. The sticker that was affixed to the front was removed (before I bought it) and shows an outline where it was. The individual record sleeves are all in very good condition showing some light wrinkling and handling wear. The booklet has a little bit of handling wear as well (front & back) but is otherwise very nice. The labels are spotless and the vinyl is clean across all four LPs. I can't stress enough how beautiful these sets are. Leadbitter's 'Chicago Breakdown' is still one of the finest books ever written on Chicago blues, and these 'Genesis' sets are every bit as important. An important & historical compilation!
