White Light/White Heat was released in 1968 and the second album from Velvet Underground. In was also the band’s final studio album with co-founder John Cale. It contains VU classics such as Heard Her Call My Name, Here She Comes Now and the 17 minute distorted fuzz sound of Sister Ray. The album’s aggressive sound was an intentional reaction by the band against the flower-power vibe of the “Summer of Love.” Deemed at the time as a ‘difficult’ listen, WL/WH would prove profoundly influential upon such artists as the Stooges, David Bowie, Suicide, the Buzzcocks and Nirvana, to name a few. A true classic, which has only grown stronger with time.

Triva: the album’s fuzzed-out guitar sounds were the direct result of the band’s endorsement deal with Vox – the first American band to use the UK company’s equipment including Vox amps, fuzz pedals etc.

Sleeve: Original non-laminated sleeve which remains clean. Best described as solid, no rips, splits or writing, all images and text are sharp and fully readable, all edges straight and true, including opening edge. Fully readable and proud (uncrushed) spine. Lovely condition, graded EX+ to M-

Labels: MGM smooth blue and gold labels, ‘Sunbury Music Ltd on both sides. Clear of any unwanted writing, sticker residue, graded EX/EX+

Vinyl: Visually both sides retain their glossy sheen and good groove distinction as new (only played a handful of times). Closer inspection (under bright light and a magnifying glass) shows no real signs of play, graded EX+/M-

Audio: Plays through clean/with no problems, no skips or sticks, pips or pops or crackle graded EX+ (played on a Project carbon - blue Ortofon)

I am a collector of 47+ years, the few records I sell are either the results of upgrades, duplicates (as this is) or a bit of thinning every now and again. I strictly adhere to the Record Collector Magazine's Grading Guide using one + or - for addition guidance:

MINT: The record itself is in ‘brand new condition’ with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition.

EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and / or creasing.

VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.
