Description
Gramophone records are composed of a pressed shellac compound, which began being made in 1895. These one-sided discs could only be played on a gramophone for about two minutes at 60-70 rpms. They competed with Edison’s music cylinders at the time.
This particular 7-inch record is an early one, numbered #495. On the inner disc is information which is mostly hand-inscribed. Near the left of “the label” is the patent date of “Feb. 18, 1895.” Near the bottom, in inscribed cursive, is the title of the banjo duett (?) by Cullen and Collins entitled “Mo Angeline,” recorded in Washington, D.C. in 1897.
Since I don’t own a gramophone, I’m not sure how it sounds, but the disc is pretty thick and heavy (see photos). I also guarantee that it’s playable.
It’s one of the earliest versions of a Gramophone record.
