JAMES VAN DERZEE PHOTOGRAPHS

Scarce Gallery Show POSTER - 1975?

Prestigious G. Ray Hawkins Gallery is noted for its photography collections and exhibits. The owner started his gallery on Melrose, Los Angeles in 1975. Back then many people did not believe that photography was a form of art. Through visionaries like Hawkins, photography is now considered a form of art.

Hawkins' gallery has presented many photography legends over the years, with James Van Derzee being one of them.

This photograph is indicative of what made Derzee famous. The poster measures 17 1/2" Wide X 23 1/2" High. Black metal frame, the poster is under glass.

From what I can gather, this gallery exhibit was held around 1975. That was the year Hawkins opened is gallery on Melrose (the gallery is now in Santa Monica) and I believe the Derzee exhibition was one of his first shows. Plus, the company that did the framing, Discovery Galleries was located in Century City (ABC Entertainment Center). The phone number on the label has a 213 area code. That is prior to 310 area code which has been around seemingly forever.

Superb opportunity to hang-up a poster from a famous gallery and displaying the artwork of an iconic photographer.
