Vinyl Jazz LPs: Ella, Bird, Brubeck & More

Greetings to Traditional Jazz Aficionados and LP collectors! Looking for Vinyl LPs of some Traditional Jazz Masters? If so, you will certainly want to check out this small lot of LPs by some of the greatest artists in jazz music, and a few interesting extras. Altogether this lot consists of 11 Albums, three of which are two-record sets, 14 LP records in all. Here's the breakdown:

.) CHARLIE PARKER "The Verve Years" (1948-50): Presented chronologically, the legendary recordings, including the first "Charlie Parker with Strings" sides: the Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Buddy Rich, Curly Russell session; and Parker's first Verve recording, "Repetition" with the Neil Hefti Orchestra. Verve VE-2-2501: A 1976 two-record  compilation of music previously released on four Verve albums: V8001, V8004, V8006 & V 8009. Album Condition: Excellent, complete with cellophane lined paper inner sleeves.

.) CHARLIE PARKER "The Verve Years" (1950-1951): Bird's studio and Carnegie Hall recordings with string orchestra; the legendary sessions with Miles Davis, Coleman Hawkins, Buddy Rich, Hank Jones, Red Rodney, John Lewis & others. Verve VE-2-2512: A 1976 two-record  compilation of music previously released on four Verve albums: V6-8000, V6-8002, V6-8003, V6-8004, V6-8008, V6-8010, V6-8126 & V6-8129. Album Condition: Excellent, complete with cellophane lined paper inner sleeves.

.) ELLA FITZGERALD "The Cole Porter Songbook": Ella's brilliant interpretation and performance of 32 of Cole Porter's greatest tunes.  Verve VE-2-2511: A 1976 two-record set of music previous released on Verve album V-4001-2. Album Condition: Excellent, complete with anti-static cellophane inner sleeves.

.) DAVE BRUBECK Quartet, featuring Paul Desmond "Jazz Impressions of the USA": During the 50s, Dave Brubeck became one of the most popular musicians in both the jazz and classical worlds. In a 6-decade career and over 90 years of life, Brubeck made unusual time signatures, complex harmonies, and improvised counterpoint approachable to mainstream listeners.  His poly-rhythm and poly-tonality continue to inspire jazz innovation to this day. This copy of Columbia LP CL 984 (High Fidelity, mono) is on the original 1957 Columbia red and black label. The LP condition is VG-Excellent. The album cover shows mild signs of age.

.) DAVE BRUBECK Quartet "Jazz at Oberlin": Once again, sweet Alto Sax player Paul Desmond joins Dave Brubeck in one of many concert tours of college campuses. This Fantasy High Fidelity microgroove LP #3-245 features a momentous concert that took place at Oberlin College's Finney Chapel in Ohio on March 2, 1953. The LP is made of transparent red speckled vinyl. Quite unique!

.) DAVE BRUBECK and Jay & Kai "At Newport": Trombonists J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding joint Dave Brubeck at the Newport (RI) Jazz Festival on July 6, 1956. This copy of Columbia LP #3-CL932 has the original deep red and black label from the period.  The LP is in VG condition. The album cover shows minimal wear.

.) PAUL DESMOND "Take Ten": After Paul Desmond's phenomenal success in writing and performing “Take Five” on Alto Saxophone with the Dave Brubeck Quartet, he just had to expand his horizons. “Take Ten” also features Jim Hall on guitar.  RCA Victor Dynagroove LP #LSP-2569 is a Stereo recording from 1963. The LP is in excellent condition. The album cover shows minimal wear.

.) TOMMY DORSEY ORCHESTRA starring Warren Covington "The Fabulous Arrangements of Tommy Dorsey in HiFi": Twelve tunes from the original Tommy Dorsey charts as played by Tommy's Orchestra under the direction of Warren Covington. Decca LP #DK78802 is a true Stereo recording with proper RIAA equalization. The LP was not recommended for play in a phonograph with a mono cartridge and stylus.  This particular copy has a pink label that is marked "Special Pressing – Not for Sale". LP Condition: Good.

.) NEWPORT ALL-STARS "Tribute to Duke": Recorded live in Basel, Switzerland on Oct 29, 1969, The Newport All Stars play a concert that is entirely dedicated to music made famous by Duke Ellington and his orchestra. BASF LP #20717 is recorded in Stereo, but may be played on monaural record players.

.) Port Authority: In 1971, The US NAVY jumped on the musical BAND-wagon with an 11-piece ensemble that blended Funk, Rock and Jazz, ala the likes of popular horn bands like Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears, Lighthouse, 10-Wheel Drive, Chase, and Earth, Wind & Fire. This particular LP may be a little different from your other jazz records, but you may just find it interesting. The musicianship is nothing less than you would expect from a military band ensemble.

.) Dave Roper Trio "Inn Concert-Jazz Lites": While you may have never heard of this trio, this LP, which was recorded at the King George Inn in Allentown, PA on Oct 19, 1980 is bound to pique the curiosity of those who seek to hear jazz at the local level. These guys play quite well. In addition, the members of the trio autographed the album cover. The Dave Roper Trio is still booking concerts in 2014.
