1980 the first big gramophone record of a new rock group is an event not only for the musicians themselves but for all those who are looking forward to unheard-of recordings for their tape recorders and discos. She awakens interest, gives rise to hope. will they be justified? It seems that this time the first disc of the "Zodiac" group - "Disco Alliance" - gives grounds for optimism. Both the name of the group and the music itself attract attention and excite the imagination. This is music for young people that has a wide range of uses: you can listen to it alone, relying on a flight of fantasy, you can dance in its companion, it can just serve as a background. Motor rhythmic pulsation, suggestive timbres and acoustic effects of electronic instruments, a simple, discreet melodic pattern - all this creates a peculiar, modern mood, sometimes cosmically unreal, as if evaporating (Mirage, Zodiac), sometimes almost grotesque, cheerful ("Rock on Ice", "Polo"). This is music for young people, created by young people. The members of the group are not more than twenty-one years old. They are students of the Latvian State Conservatory. language. Vitols. The leader of the "Zodiac" Janis Lusens studies at the composition department (class of Prof. Y. Ivanov). He plays electronic keyboards and is also an arranger for his works. The future pianist Zane Griva mainly plays the piano in the group. Andris Reinis (percussion instruments) and Ainars Ash-manis (bass guitar) study at the wind instruments department. Guitarist Aid-is Snlis at the conservatory is engaged in the double bass class. I am pleased with the professional preparedness of all five young musicians, which manifests itself in the compositional structure of musical works and in the ability to play various instruments, as well as in the understanding of style and cohesion. The creative use of the world's best achievements, the enthusiasm, and the solo work of the band members gave the first kind of gramophone record in our country. And this alone tests to the fact that the beginning is promising. Which direction to go next. The members of the ensemble are already thinking about this today.
