Description

Here is a very nice example of a record that rarely appears on the market. The box is in top class condition as can be seen in the photos. Only the very mildest wear to the corners. The back of the box has a couple of small dark patches that can be seen in the photo.
This copy does not have the line by line libretto which I understand was an optional extra at the time of purchase. It does however have the accompanying booklet which explains the plotline, historical context etcetera. It does have the two cardboard inserts & sheets of acid free paper.
All the discs appear in fine shape at first glance. However on close inspection there is distinct "bag rash" visible on sides 4 & 5 in particular with some very feint evidence of the same on Sides 1, 6 & 7. This may be the culprit for a certain amount of surface noise encountered on playback. The bravest amongst you might opt to go down the Meguiar's Plastix route but I don't have the courage for that. The odd scuff can also be made out & some very feint hairlines/sleeve rubs. The most notable fault is a small scratch to Side 2 which causes light ticking between 12.40 & 14.00.This set is pressed fairly quietly compared to others of this vintage from the ASD, SXL or SAX series. I don't think the signal to noise ratio is always the best but am guessing that this is the case to some extent with all copies of this recording. Some of the sides feature over 25 minutes of programme material each.
Low level background surface noise is often present on playback & there is a certain amount of static popping. I find it very difficult to say for sure whether these pops represent legitmate ticks or not as they are at such a low volume. However I have noted pops at 2.05 & 20.05 of Side 1. There is the ticking as described on Side 2. There is a period of notable extraneous noise at 24.40 of Side 3 for 20 seconds but I wouldn't say that this was definitely ticking. There is a bit of extra noise at 2.05 of Side 4 & 2 ticks at 8.45. There are 2 very light ticks at 8.45 & 5 more at 12.10 of Side 6.The original inner sleeves show signs of having been stored in a slightly humid environment & are rather wrinkled as opposed to pancake flat. This makes sense when looking into the "bag rash" issue. I have placed the discs in new poly lined inners but will include the originals for the winner of this auction.
