In his own elaboration of Liszt's transcription of Saint-Saens tone poem,
Horowitz does not seek to outdo Liszt in creating new technical hazards for the performer, in piling "Pelion on Ossa".
He is only readjusting the music to the capabilities of contemporary pianists, in particular to his own enormous pianistic resources.
The measure of success of a transcription is its power to make one forget the original.
In Horowitz's transcription & in his performance one hardly remembers that the Danse Macabre was composed for the orchestra.
The pianist's virtuosity is fabulous; yet the total impression of the transcription is that of a bold, ingenious retelling of the ghostly tale of the fiddler's death,
who at midnight leads skeletons out of tombs & into a rattling, compulsive dance, until the crowing of the cock sends them scurrying to their graves.
The paintings pictured in this book are from Horowitz's collection of masterpieces with which he surrounded himself at home & he stated he bought
"to please only myself".
