Description

Vocalion 1094 Henry Thomas John Henry/Cottonfield Blues

Here is your chance to own an extremely rare and culturally significant artifact of American musical history - an original 78 RPM 10" Record of "John Henry" with "Cottonfield  Blues" by Henry Thomas a.k.a. Ragtime Texas!  This hard-to-find blues record was produced circa 1927 by Vocalion with the catalog number 1094.

Henry Thomas was a minstrel and country blues singer who played guitar with a unique finger-picking technique and simultaneously employed a pan-flute-like reed instrument called the quills, which he made famous.  His sound was an early predecessor of the style that became known as Texas Blues, influencing Blind Lemon Jefferson, Lightnin' Hopkins, T-Bone Walker, Freddie King, Albert Collins, and Jimmie & Stevie Ray Vaughan.  Thomas' songs have been famously recorded by Bob Dylan, Taj Mahal, the Grateful Dead, the Lovin' Spoonful, and Canned Heat , whose hit "Goin' Up The Country" is an adaptation of "Bull Doze Blues" with the flute quoting Thomas' quills melodies verbatim!

The label is in GOOD CONDITION with some scratches, fading, and minor pencil marks.  The record itself is in POOR CONDITION and shows heavy wear; it has not been tested.  This 78 is a very, very rare document of one of the most important periods in the development of 20th century music, and would make an excellent archival or display piece.   Please see our pictures!

This scarce record is an amazing piece of American history and makes a great addition to any collection of music!
