Home-Recorded Silvertone Record Containing FDR President Roosevelt's Famous WWII Speech
Before people had tape recorders, they made recordings on records. Recordio machines were the most prevalent, and a variety of companies made blank discs. People recorded events at home on record, including audio from the radio.
This Silvertone record is recorded at 78 rpm and measures 8" in diameter and has a metal base. The label on both sides says "Roosevelt December 8 1941."
Both sides contain is a portion of FDR's famous speech when he says that the night before Japanese Forces had attacked Guam, Midway Island, etc. On the second side, it begins with he says a state of war exists between the United States and the Japanese Empire (to great applause).
Then an announcer breaks and the National Anthem plays. Afterwards, the announcer says "back to the capitol of the United States. Another announcer gives a recap and says the president has retired from the Chamber of the House of Representatives, and continues with the next steps until the record ends.
Both sides play clearly with some ticking and popping. Visually there are scratches and wear on both sides.
What I DON'T know is if this record was made at the time of the original broadcast, or if a station had rerun the historic broadcast a few years later, and this person recorded that recap. Online research shows labels of this type being known as early as 1944, and it's POSSIBLE this label was around in 1941. If this is a recording of the original broadcast, that would make this a valuable piece of recorded history. It does contain the announcers on side 2, so perhaps it is.
And if it's not, it's still a neat piece of Americana from one of the most important days in history.
