This set is the most thrilling and realistic yet recorded ! The Boston Symphony Orchesrta and Chorus perform with great verve and power under the baton of Erich Leinsdorf. Not even the exquisite sets of Kempe and Kubelik can compete here. Konya gives the best recorded portrayal of the mystical knight, Lohengrin. He combines chivalry, strength and tenderness in this treasured and moving performance. Amara is memorable as the dreamy, vulnerable, virgin, Elsa. Rita Gorr is her driven, hateful nemesis, Ortrud. Hines is a regal Henry. With such resources Leinsdorf has given us a magisterial, vital, and authoritative reading of Wagner's score, a reference shelf recording that even Kempe and Kubelik cannot equal.

Sandor Konya - The GREATEST LOHENGRIN EVER! Never before - or after - have I heard that story of Grail told / sung so beautifully. No other tenor has got the potential this Hungarian had in both his voice itself as such and in his interpretation of this role: depth, warmth, sheer beauty, colour, heft, masculinity, humanity, style, musicality, phrasing - you name it, and let it be whatever - but it's THERE. Windgassen, Domingo, King, Thomas, Schock - all great tenors and worthy competitors but it is Konya who IMO wears all the laurels. Just for him - even if only for him - this recording is worth listening to.

He (Sandor Konya) was the greatest Lohengrin of his generation--in fact, his Lohengrin has yet to be equaled--and the versatility on display here is quite gratifying.

Sandor Konya was simply the best Lohengrin around during his time. His voice always had enough heft for the role, but he always sang it with real beauty. As many other recordings attest, this is not the case with many other tenors.

About TEXAS CLASSIC VINYL…

I specialize in collecting classics in a few genres (mostly Classical and Opera). I started my vinyl collection in New York many years ago (buying mostly classical LPs from specialty record stores in New York City and metropolitan area). Shortly after moving to Texas, I acquired the complete opera collection (about 4000 LPs) from the University of Texas (most of which I still have and will be listing). I obtained a fair amount of the classical collection from the person who won that auction from the University of Texas. I only try to list LPs that I have that are in excellent (EX) to mint (M) condition. I also have Rock and other genres collections. I will be weeding out duplicates, etc. and listing rock, etc., at times. As for 45s, I have thousands of 45s from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and even 90s (though most of what I have is from the 60s to 80s…). I enjoy collecting and hope to provide a service to the LP/45 collecting community by listing only high quality vinyl for personal listening enjoyment!

GRADING LPs and 45s

All LPs and 45s are graded visually, under careful inspection. At Texas Classic Vinyl, I have many years' experience of vinyl evaluation.  Some of the most sought-after (and/or more questionable LPs/45s) will be play graded on a fine 2-channel stereo system; if the LP/45 has been play graded, then, that will be stated in the listing. All LPs are scrutinized carefully and described to the best of my ability.  I do realize, of course, that a visual estimation can be mistaken, and, if that happens, it's my hope that civility and understanding prevails. I will do whatever is needed (partial to complete refunds) to ensure excellent customer service. Hopefully, these will be rare instances! I need to say this since the used LP business is a tough one with many collectors expecting exactly what they pay for. On that note, I prefer to “under grade” so that I can ship an item with the utmost confidence…

M = Mint This is the highest grade for an LP/45. Such an LP/45 will be SEALED and is in NEW condition. I may have an LP/45 that was opened and played only once, but once an LP/45 is opened, the highest grade I’d list it at would be NM (see below). 

NM = Near Mint This is the second highest grade for a used LP/45. Such an LP has been well cared-for and contains no scratches or scuffs.  An LP that is play graded and listed in this condition should play almost flawlessly (there may be a tick or two here and there…)

EX = Excellent This signifies that the LP/45 has been very well cared for, but may contain a few light scratches, which is not expected to produce much (if any) surface noise.

VG+ = Very Good Plus An LP/45 that is assigned this grade is still in very good condition, with more light surface marks than EX.  A disc in this condition may also have some extraneous surface noise, however it should not be expected to interfere with the enjoyment of the music for most collectors. 

VG = Very Good At this point which expect some surface-noise in at least a part of the vinyl to interfere with enjoyment of the music for a majority of most collectors.  These LPs/45s may contain one or a few very visible scratches.  It is possible that such an LP/45 might tick loudly in some areas (for a few seconds up to a minute or so), and yet, the rest of the side might play flawlessly.  I would generally encourage only those collectors who consider themselves pretty tolerant to pursue an LP in this condition. I don’t normally list LPs in this condition, although there are some 45s, which are highly desired and collectible (rare, etc.), that might be considered and sold in this condition. As such, you will generally not see records listed at or below this condition.

In decreasing desirability (rarely do I have any records in these conditions in my listings), the remainder of the grading scale is:

• VG- (Very Good Minus) 
• G+ (Good-Plus)
• G (Good)
• G- (Good Minus)
• F (Fair)
• P (Poor)

COVERS

It’s tough to grade record covers. As such, I prefer to simply list any particular defects or merits of a particular cover. Defects would include sticker-pulls, seam-splits, cut out holes, browning or discoloration of the cover, etc. Merits include still in shrink-wrap, stored in a protective sleeve, or sealed, etc.

SHIPPING

For domestic (US) shipping, for those who would like to purchase multiple lots, I charge a flat rate of 50 cents for each additional 45, LP, or Box Set, or CD. So, if, for example, you buy five box sets, you will only pay full shipping for one box set and then 50 cents for each additional box set. Whichever box set has the highest shipping cost will be the starting point and then the additional 50 cents per box set will be added. It’s just easier to do it this way and there is no confusion as to whether it is a 45, LP, or box set being added. The same additional cost applies (mix and match as you so desire…).

OFFERS

Feel free to make offers too (when this option is provided). If it’s within reason, I will consider it. Please don’t waste my time by offering something ridiculous, like a $1 offer on a $20 LP! (I’ve had some of those in the past).  I don’t always take all offers (but, if an item has been on for awhile, offers become quite appealing).
