No other troupe are as tight, as decorated or as outright funky as the JBs. Led by James Brown-appointed leader Fred Wesley (who replace Pee Wee Ellis) their work with Brown, Collins and Byrd is as instantly distinctive as it is heavily sampled. Damn Right I Am Somebody was the first of three instrumental albums they delivered in the early 70s and it's a loaded cannon of bright, super-tight funk and soul. From energetic, heavy groove highs ("I'm Payin' Taxes What I'm Buyin'") to emotional, yearning compositions ("Make Me What You Want Me To Be") to hushed, romantic, end-of-night soul ("You Sure Love To Ball"), this is testament to how on-point the JB's were under Fred's leadership.
