The Wild Swans' gosling transformation came in 1988, carrying the weight of a near-mythic gestation, the band having emerged in early-80s Liverpool beside Echo & The Bunnymen and Teardrop Explodes, issuing the cult 'Revolutionary Spirit' before splintering. By the time this debut manifested - reshaped about vocalist Paul Simpson and guitarist Jeremy Kelly - the post-punk austerity of their origins had given way to windswept, post-shoegaze soundwalls, often compared to U2's panoramic mid-80s sweep. Simpson's icy, devotional baritone hears him explore faith, doubt and sympathetic exile, lyrics shot with Cold War unease. This 2026 Music On Vinyl crystal-clear reissue restores yet another of their albums to bridge eras.
