A BRIEF ARTIST DESCRIPTION

(Scroll Down for Album Description & Supersize Photos)

Wilson Pickett (March 18, 1941 – January 19, 2006) was an American R&B and soul singer. Known for his raw, passionate delivery, he was a major figure in the development of Southern soul music.

One of the most popular black singers of the ’60s, Wilson Pickett helped introduce the aggressive, rhythmic style of soul music. Aided immeasurably by the excellent studio bands backing him at the Stax Studios in Memphis, Tennessee, and the Fame Studio in Muscle Shoals Alabama, Pickett scored a series of R&B and pop hits on Atlantic Records between 1963 and 1972 that included “In the Midnight Hour,” “Mustang Sally,” and “Funky Broadway.”

In 1964, Pickett signed with Atlantic Records and did his early recordings in the Stax studio in Memphis, Tennessee with Booker T. Jones and Steve Cropper of The MGs. Cropper co-authored three of his early hits, “In the Midnight Hour” and “Don’t Fight It from his debut album The Exciting Wilson Pickett that established him as a major soul star. The album also included “Ninety-Nine and a Half (Won’t Do),” “She’s So Good to Me,” and “Land of a 1,000 Dances,” all recorded at Fame Studio in Muscle Shoals.

Pickett then had hits with “Mustang Sally,” “I Found a Love,” and “Funky Broadway,” all recorded in Muscle Shoals. Pickett then teamed with Bobby Womack in 1968 for Midnight Mover that yielded a Top 10 R7B and pop hit with Womack’s title song. In 1969, Pickett had a major hit with The Beatles “Hey Jude,”, followed in 1970 by “Sugar, Sugar.” Later in 1970, Pickett worked with producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia. The result was two crossover hits “Engine Number Nine,” and “Don’t Let the Green Grass Fool You.”

After crossover hits “Don’t Knock My Love - Part 1” and “Fire and Water” Pickett left Atlantic for RCA, with minimum success. Pickett later recorded for several record companies, including his own Wicked label, but failed to have anymore hits.

ALBUM DESCRIPTION

On Hey Jude, Pickett and producer Rick Hall decided to throw a couple of recent rock covers into the mix, "Hey Jude" and "Born To Be Wild", a combination of artist and material that works far better than anyone would have a right to expect. But the most notable change in Pickett's approach for this album was the addition of Duane Allman on guitar; his wirey, blues-accented leads don't overpower the album, but they add a noticeably harder texture to the sound, and that seems to suit Pickett, one of the toughest soul shouters of his time, just fine. Most of the Hey Jude is dominated by hard Southern soul numbers like "A Man and a Half" and "Toe Hold", and Pickett, one of the most dependable performers on the 1960's soul scene, gives a typically con brio performance on all ten tracks, and the sharp report of the horn section and Allman's blistering guitar makes for music just as potent as the wail of the lead singer.

Personnel: Wilson Pickett (vocals); Duane Allman, James Johnson, Albert Lowe (guitar); Joe Arnold, Aaron Varnell (tenor saxophone); James Mitchell (baritone saxophone); Gene Miller, Jack Peck (trumpet); Barry Beckett (piano); Marvell Thomas (organ); Jerry Jammot, David Hood (bass instrument); Roger Hawkins (drums); The Sweet Inspirations (background vocals).

 THE AUDIO

I can only describe the audio as stunning crystal clear and vibrant with great stereo separation, no distortion whatsoever. It plays through with no skips, jumps, pops or clicks, it sounds perfect in my opinion. (Obviously with an album of this age an odd bit of static has to be allowed for, but I barely heard any at all!) I would rate the audio conservatively as Nr Mint, I doubt you will get better.

THE VINYL

On visual inspection the vinyl looks mint, lays perfectly flat on the turntable with no sounding marks needle marks or scratches, not a hint of groovewear, I imagine I probably have only ever played this copy of the album a handful of times. Only under a strong angled light can any wispy sleeve removal type marks be seen, hence in my opinion I would grade the vinyl as Nr Mint.

THE LABELS

The Atlantic Plum & Red labels look superb, clean with no marks or writing I can barely see any marks of spidering at all. The spindle holes are perfectly round with no signs of wear at all, exceptionally rare to find in a 40 year old record like this. I would grade the labels as Nr Mint.

THE COVER

The laminated front MacNeill Press is in fantastic condition super glossy with virtually no signs of wear, there is absolutely minimal creasing which I have tried to show in the photos. The rear of the cover is stunning, looks like new as does the spine which has no wear at all, I would rate the rear of the cover as a certain Mint. Overall I would rate the cover as Nr Mint.
