Brief Info: The second Wings album that sold generally well worldwide and peaking at No 5 in the UK, it fared better still in the United States where it topped their Billboard chart even though it received average reviews at the time. Wings really found a huge audience with their following album ‘Band on the Run’ and rarely looked back thereafter. As stated above, first issues had a Braille message on the back cover, said to be for Stevie Wonder meaning “We love ya baby”, later printings were flat without this raised dot detail. This copy is a first issue with the Braille message. The album was quite lavishly packaged: the gatefold cover included a 12 page book stapled inside and the package as a whole is very nice. I haven’t offered a copy of this for ages, most found have considerably played records and the covers are invariably badly rubbed and worn. Although the record has numerous surface marks, most are fine and faint and the record plays very well with very little unwanted. Not for visual purists, but it will please many collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, mostly smooth surfaces. The top left area of the back has a raised dot Braille message. Inside is a triple stapled (2 punched into the spine) 12 page book. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse. Includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: In terms of rubbing and wear, this front has barely any, and that is very unusual for a dark matt cover. The only issue of any note are several very fine edge creases that have minimal visibility, seen a little more under light. This is very clean, fresh and attractive with no sticker issues. Certainly one of the least worn I have seen in ages.

Cover Back: The back – against the odds – is even better with minimal creasing at all and hardly rubbed again. The lack of ring wear is always welcome news on predominately black surfaces and seldom seen as such. The Braille detail is immaculate and the raised dots are unrubbed. Any hint of rim impression on this ruthlessly revealing surface is negligible and faint. This back will prove difficult to find much better.

Cover Inner Gatefold & Book: The inside covers are immaculate. The book is superb as well with only a gentle trace of set-off on the final page where the whiter surface rests upon coloured ink, this difficult to avoid and few would have even thought of doing so. All pages are crisp with no hard creasing, all solidly connected with three staples. The top and bottom ones punched into the main cover spine and still very solid. The third simply acts to hold the pages together.

Top Edges: Generally straight, flush and parallel without rubbing.

Bottom Edges: Very similar, any rub traces tiny, few and faint.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with any thickening traces very little and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge, all are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Superb with two ultra solid and totally unloosened staples that connect the inside book to its cover. Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn, the surface and even the folds devoid of rubbing.

Corners: Any tip rubs minuscule, tiny and faint with better than excellent shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this unforgiving 1970’s matt cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. Yes, some fine edge creases on the front, but they have very little visual impact, and as stated, viewed full-on, they hardly resister. This beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a plain white solid unlined inner with ‘PATENT Nos. 1125555’ text as used by many EMI-pressed records of the time. The paper gently aged with light discolouration but hardly creased. Just one small edge thin, but all still naturally intact.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: VERY GOOD: arguably better. A fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with numerous light surface marks – the owner of this one a little too keen on cloth cleaning possibly? – but no penetrating stylus scratches. These fine and some wispy surface marks have no audio affect and the record plays very well with hardly anything unwanted. Visually still a fine record that should please many collectors, but for the visual purists this time.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays above it’s visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. The fine surface marks are simply ignored, and if audio quality is more important that visual perfection, this still delivers. I feel sure this has not been played many times, such fine surface marks usually caused by dry cloth ‘cleaning’, probably a little too enthusiastically on this one? Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better for fine sound and can be recommended on that basis – along with the very fine packaging.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
