The Walkmen may have had their collective tongue somewhat in cheek when they called their first record, Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me Is Gone (Startime International/2001) but the acclaim and attention it received was anything but insincere. The Washington DC-bred, New York-based quintet's emphatic, deeply textured rock was embraced by fans, radio and press alike as something fresh and unexpected, which is why their second album, the Dave Sardy-produced Bows + Arrows, was equally as well received and was one of 2004's most acclaimed releases.
