Background -
The Water Lily Acoustics LPs are highly sought after for their pure, clear, and simple mastering (thanks to Kavi Alexander) - as audiophiles are aware, the sound is typically superb! All Water Lily titles are out of print....this is your chance to grab a Water Lily title and try it out for yourself - you'll be glad you did!Dom Um Romão (3 August 1925 – 27 July 2005) was a Brazilian jazz drummer and percussionist. Noted for his expressive stylings with the fusion band Weather Report, Romão recorded with varied artists such as Cannonball Adderley, Paul Simon, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Jorge Ben, Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 and Tony Bennett. He died in Rio de Janeiro shortly after suffering a stroke. He was the percussionist Tom Jobim brought to the studio for the legendary album Jobim recorded with Frank Sinatra in 1967 for Reprise "Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim”.
A legendary name in bossa nova, and one of the premier drummers who introduced Brazilian percussion and rhythms into jazz, Dom Um Romão began his career playing drums at balls and cabarets in Rio De Janeiro at the end of the 40s. He also worked at Rádio Tupi supporting singers and formed, in the 50s, the group Copa Trio, playing at Beco das Garrafas in Copacabana.
In 1958 Romão participated in the recording of the record “Canção do Amor Demais” by Elizeth Cardoso, with musics by Tom Jobim and guitar by João Gilberto - the album is considered a landmark in bossa nova.
In the 1960s Dom Um Romao joined Sergio Mendes' jazz ensemble. His first album, Dom Um, came out in 1964. The next year he moved to the United States and continued to work with Sergio Mendes. He became more globally known in 1971, when he replaced Airto Moreira in the legendary fusion band Weather Report.
After signing with the Muse label, he released his first solo album in the United States in 1972, “Dom Um Romão.” This album was well received and placed him in the top percussionists of the era. He promptly followed up with “Spirit of the Times,” in ’73, and “Hotmosphere,” in ’76.
By the 1980s he had relocated to Switzerland, yet in the 90s, he spent more time back in Brazil with recordings and workshops. During this period he released “Samba Da Rua,” (’90) and “Saudades,” then in 1997 he offered the much heralded “Rhythm Traveler.”
With the arrival of the new century, Romao went for a more eclectic and contemporary sound in “Lake of Perserverance.” (2001) This was a dramatic departure from his more Brazilian influenced outings.
He was one of the pioneers, along with Airto, in introducing small percussion to a broader range of music. Throughout his career, Dom Um Romão worked with such artists as Cannonball Adderley, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Helen Merrill, McCoy Tyner, Ron Carter, Astrud Gilberto, Walter Wanderley, Stanley Turrentine, Flora Purim, Luiz Henrique and Ithamara Koorax.
Dom Um Romão, percussionist extraordinaire, died July 27, 2005 in Rio de Janeiro, at age 79.
SAUDADES - This music is an interesting and unique blend of Afro-Brazilian and Afro-American funky rhythms. The music has some percussion, horns and vocals, as well as some Brazilian instrumentation.
The LP was recorded during the time when Dom Um Romao was playing with Weather Report.
The sound on this record is absolutely breathtaking in its immediacy and dynamic qualities. It is natural and has a "large sound". It also has a very low noise-floor, with plenty of detail. The LP was recorded and released in 1991, and it is long out of print. Water Lily wanted to use only one stamper for all their LP issues, known as "one step plating process".
Dom Um Romao is a master Brazilian percussionist, formerly of Weather Report. He is accompanied here by Alex Blake on bass, Chico Freeman on sax, and fellow Brazilian Izio Gross on piano, in an attempt to bridge the music of Bahia and Harlem.
After a fifteen year hiatus, Dom Um Romão, a Carioca who spent the second half of his life in the USA, released a new record. Predictably it's quite different from the albums he'd released in the seventies on the Muse record label. Saudades somehow harks back to those free albums Wayne Shorter recorded around 1970, thus linking it to Weather Report, of which Shorter and Romão were founding members.
It's a small acoustic lineup, bass, saxophone occasional piano, percussion. It's due to the excellent contributions of the musicians and their dense interplay that this session radiates a serenity that doesn't leave much to be wished for: Alex Blake, bass, Chico Freeman, soprano and some tenor sax, Izio Gross, piano, and percussion by Valtinho Anastacio and Dom Um Romão. Chico Freeman's lyrical play in particular is stunning.
In the musical landscape of the early nineties, Saudades is a unique Jazz release, an overlooked gem and perhaps Dom Um Romão's most mature solo album. - yofriend

CONDITION Details:
The LP jacket is in near mint minus condition! The jacket is tight and clean, with NO seam splits, with little to no shelf wear at the seams, spine and corners (see pics). The colors on the jacket are sharp. Considering the age of the LP, the jacket is in superb condition (see pictures with this listing as they are of the actual item).
The LP is in near mint minus condition! We found that the vinyl looked superb on this LP. There are no significant marks on the vinyl that we could see, even under strong, white light. The LP retains much of the original gloss and sheen. NO serious spindle marks either. Just beautifully made vinyl! That said, acquiring a vintage LP like this is for the performance and rarity of the LP, not necessarily for the sound quality.A Short Note About LP GRADING -
